Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) and The Department of Telecommunications are once again skirmishing over regulations in the Indian wireless arena. considering the DoT, which says that a charge should be made for extending 2G licences, suggesting an INR8.25 billion (USD192 million) renewal fee for a ten-year extension.
With licences for 3G services set to run for 20 years, DoT is concerned that some operators may not be able to use their new licence for the full tenure; the period of expiry of licence fees for 2G services varies from operator to operator. Looking at the flip side TRAI is quoted as saying that the ‘renewal of licences should be automatic unless extreme conditions of national security warrant otherwise’.
