T-Mobile and 3 UK together signed a deal with BT Wholesale in order to provide high-speed links between their base stations, for their joint venture. This a five year deal worth several hundred million pounds, a boost for BT.
Trhe deal caters to the need for mobile operators to raise the speed of data transmission as mobile broadband becomes widely used by subscribers.
BT had signed similar five year deal with O2 and Vodafone, earlier this year, Orange being left out.
Emin Gurdenli, technology director at T-Mobile UK, said: “This agreement with BT will make sure backhaul, the backbone connections of the network, is not a constraint now or in the future at a time when T-Mobile is experiencing strong growth in mobile broadband and other mobile data services.”
Brian Fitzpatrick, managing director of BT Wholesale Markets, said: “BT now supports the base station connectivity requirements of four of the five mobile players in the UK market, bringing our economies of scale to a hugely important element of the communications marketplace.”
