President Lula grants Oi-Brasil Telecom merger (Brazil)

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva agrees a change to Brazil’s telecommunications law, allowing fixed-line telecoms to operate in more than one region of the country. As reported earlier by Wireless Federation, Brazilian telecoms operator Oi (Telemar) was confident about this decision. This rule change will allow Oi to purchase Brasil Telecom, Brazil’s No. 3 fixed-line carrier. The new company is anticipated to give competition to the market leaders, Spain’s Telefonica SA and Mexico’s America Movil.
