A life saving SMS! (UK)

Vascular Surgeon, David Nott has saved a life of 16-year-old boy whose left was broken apart after he was caught in crossfire between government and rebel forces. Mr. Nott discovered that only 6in (15cm) of boy’s arm was left with dead surrounding muscle and little skin to cover the wound. Surgeon, who is based at Charing Cross Hospital in west London, said, “He was dying. He had about two or three days to live when I saw him.” The surgeon had to perform a forequarter amputation, requiring removal of the collar bone and shoulder blade. Mr. Nott got the right procedure to conduct the operation from Professor Meirion Thomas, from London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, who is been conducting such operations before. Nott contacted Professor Thomas by texting him the whole scenario in order to receive back step by step instructions via SMS.

“I texted him and he texted back step by step instructions on how to do it and it was just luck that I was there and could do it,” he said.

Such critical operations reportedly are performed just about 10 times a year in UK and that too majorly on cancer patients and require the back-up of an intensive-care unit (ICU). It is also seen that patients tend to loose a lot of blood during the procedure. The teenaged boy has now recovered fully after the surgery performed back in October.
