SMA invites bid for 3G, WiMax auction (Jamaica)

Jamaica’s Spectrum Management Authority (SMA) reportedly invites bid next week for providing wireless broadband internet services in the 2.5GHz spectrum band. The band is seeking for WiMax or 3G technology. Digicel Jamaica, Cable & Wireless Jamaica and MiPhone, of Am©rica M³vil are said to be the interested bidders.
The report further said, proposals will go through a prequalification phase before bids are called for. Licenses are expected to be granted within six weeks of the call for proposals.

Telecommunications Minister Derrick Smith, said, the new services to double or triple broadband subscribers, especially in rural areas.
