Mozambique plans to roll out an international tender for the third mobile phone licence in H1’09 as it looks forward to grow the telecommunication market in the country. “There is a market, at the moment we are just putting the bidding documents together, we hope to launch an international tender before June 20, 2009″, said Paulo Zucula, a government minister. “There are 20 million people in Mozambique and only a fraction has access to the mobile phone network, so there is too much space for growth and I’m sure that any company that would get the new license will flourish soon,” Zucula added.
Pan-African incumbents like MTN SA, Zain Kuwait might be interested in making an entry to Mozambique. Two mobile phone firms which are already operating in Mozambique are state-owned mCel and Vodacom Mozambique, with a subscriber base of 3.5 million and 1.3 million respectively.
