www.WirelessFederation.com – MTN South Africa, at the end of 2008, posted a subscriber base of 17.2 million, experiencing a hike of 16%. MTN SA ended 2008 with a market share of 36%.
MTN’s postpaid subscribers rose by 10% to 2.8 million. The growth, MTN says, was driven by the launch of MTN Anytime plan, which got MTN 259,000 new subscribers. The postpaid ARPU grew by 2%.
The prepaid subscriber base grew by 17% to 14.4 million driven by the success of MTN Zone, MTN’s pay-as-you-go price plan. MTN Zone itself attracted 6.6 million subscribers in the period of 11 months. ARPU for the prepaid sector rose by 5% to ZAR 97 a month, due to MTN Zone’s lower-denomination vouchers which boosted usage.
