www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Telephone & Data Systems, the owner of 81% stake in the USA incumbent US Cellular, has landed up in a situation which pressurises it to sell its ownership to other rival operators. US Cellular has lately experienced a growth in churn rate as the subscribers shift to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.
US Cellular which at present has a subscriber base of more than 6 million is finding it difficult to attract more subscribers as it doesn’t provide the subscribers with high end mobile handsets like the iPhone 3G, G1, or BlackBerry Storm.
US Cellular is likely to be an impressive target for Sprint and Verizon as they all use the same CDMA platform and infrastructure. Verizon Wireless, post Alltel acquisition, is all geared up to purchase regional carriers whereas for Sprint it’ll prove to boost its subscriber base as in last quarter it was the only operator to lose its subscribers.
With the saturation hitting the USA mobile market, mobile operators are finding it difficult to pump up their subscriber base in turn paving way for acquisition for larger subscriber base.
