Primax reportedly lands GPS order from Nokia

Taiwan-based Primax Electronics, a production partner of Bluetooth headsets for Nokia, reportedly has received orders for 60,000 GPS devices from the handset giant, according to sources at Taiwan-based component makers.

The GPS device in question is the Nokia 330 Auto Navigation, an in-car personal navigation device (PND) which Nokia launched on October 30, according to the sources.

Nokia and Primax both declined to comment on the report.

However, sources at Primax stated that the company has been developing devices based on GPS technology for a long time, and is now actively seeking partners to develop the GPS market.

Nokia’s entrance into the GPS market is expected to significantly affect first-tier branded PND vendors, such as TomTom, Garmin and Magellan, said the sources.
