Megafon set to get LTE license (Russia)

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Megafon, Russian number three cellco is set to become the first operator in the country to receive a Long Term Evolution (LTE) license. State Commission for Radio Frequencies will take the final decision on June 1 and the telecoms ministry has decided to include the possible allocation of frequencies on the agenda of the June 1 meeting. Investment of more than USD200 million into the region’s infrastructure has also been planned by Megafon as a part of its USD260 million contract. The State Radio Commission is also planning to discuss the creation of other zones where the new technology can also be tested, including Primorye, Kostroma, Rosotv and Sverdlovsk regions. Megafon is telecom partner to the Winter Olympic Games due to be held in Sochi in 2014 and it has requested the LTE frequencies in Sochi as a way to test out the system.
