DoCoMo picks Fujitsu, NEC for Super 3G gear

NTT DoCoMo selected Fujitsu and NEC as equipment suppliers for its Super 3G plans. Fujitsu will develop and manufacture prototypes and commercial equipment for DoCoMo’s ‘Super 3G’ base stations. Super 3G or Long Term Evolution is a standard promoted by the 3GPP and enables downlink transmission rates of over 100 Mbps and uplink rates of over 50 Mbps. Fujitsu has been actively involved in the 3GPP’s standardisation initiatives and has been developing the technologies required to improve spectrum efficiency for the Super 3G standard, such as multi-antenna system and OFDM technologies. NEC will develop equipment for Super 3G handsets with deliveries planned for 2010. Aiming to complete the development of a communication platform to realise the Super 3G mobile handsets within 2009, NEC, together with Panasonic Mobile Communications and Fujitsu, will actively promote development efforts. As the main contractor of the joint development, NEC will manage all of the joint development of the Super 3G communication platform with Panasonic Mobile Communications and Fujitsu.
