KUALA LUMPUR: PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk (XL), a majority-owned subsidiary of Malaysia’s TM Bhd, has selected Swedish telecoms technology supplier Ericsson to build its 3G/WCDMA (third generation cellular/wideband code division multiple access) network in Indonesia, TM has announced.
Under the agreement, Ericsson will supply radio access products and be responsible for the performance and improvement of the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) radio network, as well as providing operations & maintenance services.
The 3G network deployment will focus on six major cities on the islands of Java, Bali and Lombok. Ericsson will also provide business consulting to help XL prepare for the launch of its 3G network.
HSPA, the first step in the evolution path to WCDMA, lets operators introduce new services such as mobile broadband with mobile TV, mobile music, high-speed internet connectivity and fixed wireless services. Ericsson’s HSPA solution currently offers peak downlink data speeds of up to 3.6Mbps now, and up to 14.4Mbps by the end of 2006.
Ericsson’s Mobile Softswitch Solution will also be deployed to upgrade and expand XL’s 2G (second generation) and 3G networks across Indonesia as the first step in XL’s evolution to an all-IP network.
Through the introduction of a layered architecture, Ericsson’s Mobile Softswitch allows XL to have a common platform to offer new and advanced consumer services.
