Telecom Italia to launch HSUPA, 50 Mbps broadband service
Telecom Italia has announced the launch of a series of new products and services from this autumn. These include the fixed-mobile service Unico with a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps, a next-generation network with broadband speeds of more than 50 Mbps and an upgrade in mobile internet speeds with the launch of HSUPA. The first NGN will be introduced in Milan where 3,400 buildings will be equipped with broadband with enough bandwidth to offer HDTV. In view of the fact that the use of mobile phones for internet access is growing at a rate of 50 percent a year, Telecom Italia has decided to extend its HSDPA network which will reach 70 percent national coverage by the end of the year, from 35 percent in 2006. From July, mobile unit TIM will start upgrading its HSDPA network to HSUPA, with broadband speeds passing from 3.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps.
