FTC files legal suit to block Digicel-Claro merger (Jamaica)
The Digicel-Claro merger faces another hurdle as the Fair trading Commission (FTC) has reportedly approached the Supreme Court in an attempt to stop the proposed merger. According to reports, the FTC claims that the merger would negatively impact the competition in the wireless market.
Sources claim that as per the lawsuit filed by the regulatory authority, a victory would require both Digicel and Oceanic Digital to pay a fine of US$ 5 million for violating the Fair Competition Act. Further, reports reveal that telecom operator LIME had also attempted to file a legal suit in order to block the deal, claiming that the merger would provide Digicel with excessive control over the wireless market thereby hampering the level of competition.
