Oi starts lobbying for merger with Brasil Telecom(Brazil)

Brazil-based fixed-line operator Oi has started lobbying in favour of the company merging with Brasil Telecom (BrT), report the local press. The move comes days after the Brazilian government confirmed that it will examine the feasibility of the merger. According to Oi CEO Eduardo Falco, rather than resulting in monopolisation, such a merger could generate competition in the Brazilian telecommunications sector. The merger may also generate gains in productivity for the new firm which may result in lower rates, according to Falco.
