Standards body the Bluetooth Special Interest Group has approved the wireless technology’s latest release, Core Specification Version 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate). Semiconductor makers Broadcom, CSR, Infineon and Texas Instruments will have Bluetooth v2.1+ EDR chips available immediately and the first products using the chips are expected to follow by the end of the year. New features in the Bluetooth standard include improved device pairing, including for finding devices, securing the link and authenticating the devices; incorporation of NFC technology where a user can hold two devices together at a very short range to start the quick pairing process; and enhanced power optimization helping to increase device battery time.
