Ad-funded mobile phone service Blyk plans to launch later this month in the UK. Announced earlier this year, Blyk plans to offer free mobile phone services in exchange for users accepting targeted advertising on their phones. “We will launch this summer. When the summer ends? When the schools start after summer holidays — that’s September in the UK,” Fagelstedt said at a mobile phone meeting in Helsinki. The virtual operator, which is using the Orange network, will target 16- to 24-year-olds and use technology from Nokia Siemens Networks. Blyk plans to enter other European markets later. Fagelstedt said it would take 3-4 months to set up a presence in the competitive UK mobile market. Blyk was co-founded by Pekka Ala-Pietila, former president of Nokia.
