 Life:) to launch MVNO in Italy with 3 Italia (Italy)

Ukrainian mobile network operator life:) has announced plans to launch an MVNO in Italy to serve Ukrainians living and working there. Life:) Italy is set for launch in Q1 2008. Statistical data shows that over 200,000 Ukrainians live in Italy. Life:) will look to serve these residents using the network of UMTS operator 3 Italia. The MVNO will offer specially-priced tariffs for calls between Italy and Ukraine.

   

 Wind, 3 Italia study bids for tower networks (Italy)

Two Italian cellular operators are thought to be close to finalising a deal to sell off their transmission tower networks. Wind and 3 Italia are considering offers from a number of potential buyers, Thomson Financial reports, including DTM and the US fund Texas Pacific Group; a consortium formed by Clessidra, the Benettons, and Mediaset; Abertis; MacQuarie; Apax Partners; and Vito Gamberale’s F2i fund. The tower networks have been valued at around EUR1.5 billion (USD2.1 billion).

   

 

 

 3 Italia for sale? (Italy)

Hutchison Whampoa is reportedly considering the sale of its Italian 3G mobile operator, 3 Italia. UK newspaper The Times has linked Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom as potential buyers. 3 Italia is one of four cellular network operators in Italy and is Europe’s largest 3G operator, with more than 7.7 million subscribers. The company has been valued at between EUR8 billion and EUR10 billion (USD11-14 billion).

   

 

 3 Italia put up for sale, 3 UK may follow - report

Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa has put 3G mobile operator 3 Italia up for sale, reports UK newspaper The Times. Hutchison is believed to have sent out an information sheet with the aim of attracting potential bidders. Industry sources indicate that the sale could attract interest from Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom and that the move could pave the way for Hutchison to sell 3 UK as well. 3 Italia and 3 UK account for its largest 3G customer bases.

   

 3 Italia surpasses 600,000 subscribers for DVB-H service

Italian mobile telephony operator 3 Italia has surpassed the threshold of 600,000 subscribers for its mobile TV DVB-H service, launched in July 2006 during the soccer World Cup in Germany. 3 TV currently offers 12 mobile digital channels – including Sky Sport, Sky TG24, Sky Cinema, Sky Vivo, Rai Uno, Rai Due, Mediaset, Boing, La 3 Live, La 3 Sport, as well as six digital channels dedicated to soccer. The service is protected with the Nagra Mobile solution from Nagravision, based on the open standard Open Framework´s DVD.
