NTT DoCoMo announces the formation of a jont venture with Avex Broadcasting & Communications, a Japanese music and movie entertainment company, to produce and have an on-demand distribution of video content packaged for the mobile phone environment.
This will enable the users to dowload or stream the video content, which has nearly 47 channels like movies, news etc via NTT DoCoMo’s “mopera” mobile Internet service.
The service is scheduled to operate by March 2009 with capital of JPY3.5 billion and capital reserves of JPY3.5 billion, 30% from DOCOMO and 70% from Avex Entertainment (AEI).
The company will develop content specially for small screen phones giving special consideration to scripting, editing, photography, etc tailored for the mobile phone environment.
Docomo will be providing with the IT infrastructure, mobile technologies and experience with video content for mobile users. AEI will be doing the job for which it is known, content creation, artist management and services centered on intellectual property.

Mobinil unviels the 3G services, with 300 3G base stations (Egypt)

Mobinil, Egypt, unviels it’s 3G services. According to the firm, it now has 6,5000 base stations, of which 300 for 3G services and 2,100 Edge enabled. The Egyptian operator has also added switches and enhanced capacity on the network. Nokia Siemens Networks, along with Huawei were appointed to develop the 3G portion of the network, while Alcatel-Lucent and Motorola had built the 2G portion. The 3G services are available in large cities and tourist, industrial and corporate centres in Cairo, Alexandria, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, Dahab, Taba, Safaga, Marsa Alam, Luxor and Aswan, in addition to the industrial zones as well as petroleum fields and business districts.
Mobinil has planned to extend the 3G coverage, for better coverage for all the regions. The company has invested ore than EGP 3.3 billion in its network last year and plans to spend EGP 4.8 billion this year.
3 Italia selects Alcatel - Lucent for its mobile TV network enhancement (Italy)

Alcatel - Lucent signs a contract with 3 Italia for the expansion and optimization of the operators broadcast mobile TV network across the country. The solutions will be based on DVB-H terrestrial transmitters, its remote monitoring system and including network integration services, which will enable the telco to enhance the indoor and outdoor coverage and efficiency.
Alcatel-Lucnt will also extend and increase the density of the DVB-H terrestrial transmitters network across Italy, enabling 3 Italia to offer broadcast mobile TV services to its 8.45 million UMTS subscribers.
The solutions for 3 Italia will be based on its 9600 DTH, future-proof multistandard digital terrestrial transmitter that can deliver DVB-T and DVB-H broadcast solutions, as well as a smooth evolution to DVB-SH. The transmitters are designed and optimized according to the specific requirements of mobile operators and can easily be integrated into their mobile sites.
Alcatel-Lucent instigates ‘tikitag’, a consumer NFC application pack (USA)

A consumer service, ‘tikitag’ has been launched by Alcatel-Lucent ‘s Ventures programme. Tikitag enables the launching of online applications by touching an NFC device, such as a mobile phone, to an item tagged with an NFC chip. This service will be available from 1st October through e-commerce websites and offered as a a beta starter package. Package includes:
- A USB-enabled NFC reader and electronic tags
- Provide access to a community website
At the core of the tikitag service is the tikitag Application Correlation Server (ACS), which manages the link between an NFC tag and a corresponding action to be initiated. Price of the beta starter kit, including an NFC reader, 10 NFC tags, and access to the tikitag community site, is USD49.95.
Tikiphone chooses Alcatel-Lucent for the launch of 3G+ network (USA)

Tikiphone, French Polynesia-based mobile service provider, has chosen Alcatel-Lucent for the launch of 3G+ network as it will upgrade the network to High Speed Packet Access technology to support a full range of high-speed mobile internet and data services.
Tikiphone will be introducing its High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) solution in Papeete, Tahiti, which will inturn enable the operator to offer its subscribers new mobile broadband services, which will be several times faster than the current network.
API, a distributor of Alcatel-Lucent portfolio in the Pacific Islands region, will be deploying a suite of Alcatel-Lucent systems including the 9311 Macro Node B suite of products, media gateways and 9100 GSM Base station.
Yannick Teriierooiterai, general manager of Tikiphone, said: “Tikiphone’s objective is to offer optimum mobile and data services to subscribers in French Polynesia. ZTE and Huawei Technologies won CDMA equipment contracts from China Telecom (China)

Huawei Technologies and Alcatel- Lucent have won the CNY 27.9 billion worth CDMA equipment contracts from state-owned telecommunications operator China Telecom.
China Telecom has revealed the results of the bidding invitation for CDMA equipment, which was won by Huawei and ZTE. Both the firms won about 40% of the orders, followed by Alcatel-Lucent, with approximately 20%, sources reveal. Fujian Fujitsu Communication Software also got a part in the contract.
Shentel contracted Alca-Lu for upgradation (USA)

Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel) is in contract with Alcatel-Lucent to deploy 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A technology for its subsidiary Shenandoah Personal Communications Company. Under $30 million upgradation, Shenandoah’s networks in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania will be covered. Chris French, President of Shentel said that advances in technology are moving faster than ever before, and Shentel is committed to continuing to provide customers the progressive telecommunications services they need and expect. Shentel is under an affiliate deal with Sprint Nextel to have the company’s branding also that gives an access to its customer to use Sprint’s nationwide CDMA network.
RCOM offers $500million for GSM 3G network tender (India)

Reliance Communication (RCOM) is offering $500 million tender for the rollout of its GSM 3G network. Primarily, tender will cover 15 million lines. Also cover the supply of hardware components and servicing of the 3G network. RCOM is operating its GSM services in 8 circles and holds licences for the other fourteen circles, the operator’s 3G infrastructure is expected to be overlaid on these 2G networks. Vendors like Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson are in talks with RCOM.
MediaCorp to begin mobile TV trial with MobileOne Asia, SingTel Mobile and StarHub (Singapore)

MediaCorp, Singapore’s national broadcaster, will start off with a consumer trial of mobile TV using Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld (DVB-H) technology in partnership with local operators MobileOne Asia (M1), SingTel Mobile and StarHub, next month.
Close to 300 people will be included in the pilot which is scheduled to run for three months. Those taking part in the trial will be provided with a Samsung P-960 handset enabling them to access six dedicated TV channels during the three-month period, including coverage of the Beijing Olympics, Barclays Premier League action on StarHub’s Football Channel, the Singaporean Cantonese movie channel, Mei Ah Movies Channel, TVBS News and Channel News Asia. The pilot is being supported by Alcatel-Lucent and Gemalto.
Alcatel-Lucent deploys GTD’s FTTH network in Chile

Alcatel-Lucent to set up a fifth network based on GPON technology, GTD (Chilean telecommunications company) has selected. During the third quarter, installation and deployment of the GPON network is scheduled. GTD Manquehue – which serves residential customers and SMEs for the GTD Group – plans to use Alcatel-Lucent’s technology to deliver advanced broadband services, including HDTV, IPTV, VoD and high-speed internet.
Also, Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON architecture is designed to enable GTD Manquehue to migrate its traditional voice services to VoIP. GTD Manquehue will deploy the Alcatel-Lucent 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fibre-to-the-User and the Alcatel-Lucent 5520 Access Management System for element management.
