 MTS posts 87.26 million total subscribers (Russia)

MTS has reportedly added 0.32 million new subscribers during July and the total reached 87.26 million subscribers.
MTS in Russia earned 0.48 million, the total being 61.86 million. MTS in Moscow added 0.03 million subscribers, to reach a total 14.14 million subscribers at the end of July. Subscribers in the rest of Russia numbered 44.71 million. In Ukraine, MTS lost 0.53 million subscribers, reaching 18.60 million. MTS also has 4.61 million subscribers in Uzbekistan, 0.64 million in Turkmenistan, 1.56 million in Armenia and 4.07 million in Belarus. 

   

 MTS posts a 34% rise in revenues in Q2′08 (Russia)

Mobile Telesystems (MTS) has announced a rise in earnings and revenues in Q2′08, based on significant growth in subscriber base and improved margins during the period.

MTS’s net income rose to $659 million during Q2′08, reflecting a 30% rise from last year.

The revenue rose 34% over last year to $2.64 billion. The company added 2 million new subscribers, of which 81.7 thousand subscribers were added from Belarus operations.

Commenting on the results, Mikhail Shamolin, president and chief executive officer said, “We see positive dynamics in usage growth and subscriber additions in our markets, while we were able to improve margins significantly in the period. We are optimistic looking forward as our markets offer significant opportunities for continued growth”.

   

 Turkcell to attain 80% stake in BeSt (Belarus)

The leading provider of mobile communications in Turkey, Turkcell signed a Sale and Purchase Agreement (”SPA”) to acquire a 80% stake in Belarusian Telecommunications Network (”BeST”). With the fulfillment of the conditions set forth in the SPA transactions will be completed. The stake will be acquired from the State Committee on Property of the Republic of Belarus for a consideration of $500 million.

“The acquisition of BeST represents an opportunity for Turkcell to gain access to a market with a growth potential. Belarus is an attractive emerging market within Turkcell’s growth geography with its young and well educated population and steadily growing economy. We are also happy to be starting our operations with an already established third operator in Belarus,” said Turkcell CEO Sureyya Ciliv.

 MTS gets 0.64 million new subscribers in the month of June (Russian Federation)

Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) added 0.64 million new subscribers during June, reaching a total of 86.94 million users. MTS subscribers in Russia totalled 61.38 million, up by 0.52 million versus the end of April. MTS added 0.08 million subscribers in Moscow and the Moscow region to reach a total 14.11 million subscribers at the end of May. Subscribers in the rest of Russia numbered 44.31 million. In Ukraine, MTS lost 0.24 million subscribers, reaching 19.13 million. MTS also has 4.37 million subscribers in Uzbekistan, 0.57 million in Turkmenistan, 1.49 million in Armenia and 4.03 million in Belarus.

   

 Telekom Austria Group unveils xDSL, mobile growth (Austria)

Telekom Austria Group announces that the number of fixed net access lines fell to 2.4 million at end-2007, from 2.6 million at end-2006, as the fixed-to-mobile migration continued. The Fixed Network division added 28,600 net xDSL customers in Q4 2007, compared to 23,700 customers added in Q4 2006, to reach a total of 750,600 at end-2007, compared to 693,600 at end-2006. The group boosted its mobile customers by 44.6 percent to 14.8 million in 2007, boosted by the contribution of the recently-acquired MDC in Belarus and positive development across all countries. Excluding MDC, group mobile customers reached 11.7 million in 2007, up by 14.7 percent from 2006, with 510,700 net additions in Q4, compared to 454,000 net additions in Q4 2006. Mobilkom Austria added 105,600 net mobile customers in Q4, compared to 101,100 added in Q4 2006, to end with 3.96 million customers, up by 9.1 percent from end-2006. Mobilkom Austria boosted its market share to 40.3 percent at end-2007, from 38.7 percent at end-2006.

Mobiltel in Bulgaria added 284,900 net mobile subscribers in Q4 2007, versus 231,600 net additions in Q4 2006, to end with 5.1 million customers, up 19.5 percent from end-2006. Its market share fell from 52.5 percent in 2006 to 50.3 percent in 2007 in the face of stiff competition. MDC in Belarus had 3.06 million customers at end-2007, up 23 percent from end-2006, for a market share of 43.4 percent. Croatian mobile operator Vipnet ended 2007 with 2.18 million customers, up 14 percent from 2006, adding 102,600 net subscribers in Q4, compared to 106,700 net additions in Q4 2006. Vipnet’s market share was 43 percent at end-2007. Si.mobil in Slovenia had 497,200 mobile customers at end-2007, up 18.2 percent year-on-year, adding 17,400 net customers in Q4, compared to 15,000 net additions in Q4 2006. Its market share was 26.9 percent at end-2007.

   

 MTS adds almost 2 million new subs in September (Russia)

Russian mobile operator group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) ended September 77.97 million customers. During September, MTS added 1.91 million new subscribers across its mobile operators. In Russia the company ended the month with 54.42 million customers after adding 750,000 new customers. MTS in Ukraine lost 30,000 customers ending with 19.91 million subscribers. The Uzbekistan business added 110,000 new subscribers to hit 2.29 million and MTS Turkmenistan added 20,000 new customers to reach 290,000. Last month, MTS bought an indirect stake in VivaCell which ended September with 1.07 million subscribers. MTS Belarus (in which the company has a 49 percent stake) added 50,000 new subscribers during the month to reach a customer base of 3.66 million.

   

 Telekom Austria acquires 70% of Belarusian operator MDC (Austria)

Telekom Austria Group has agreed to acquire a 70 percent stake in Cypriot SB Telecom from Ead Samawi and his partners for an enterprise value of EUR 730 million. SB Telecom is the sole owner of the Belarusian mobile operator MDC. Furthermore, Telekom Austria has entered into a call and put option agreement on the remaining 30 percent stake, exercisable in the fourth quarter 2010 for EUR 320 million. Samawi will remain chairman of SB Telecom, while all executive management positions in SB Telecom and MDC will be nominated by Telekom Austria, which will have full operational control.

Telekom Austria has also agreed on a performance-based deferred consideration. The amount of the deferred consideration, which is payable in the fourth quarter 2010, will be directly linked to the future financial performance of MDC and may increase the enterprise value to 6.5×10E EBITDA. In return, the Telekom Austria has full access to the free cash flow and dividend distributed. MDC, which markets its mobile communication services under the brand names Velcom for postpaid services and Privet for prepaid services, is the number-two operator in Belarus, with a market share of approximately 42 percent and more than 2.7 million customers. The Belarus market had a mobile penetration of 66 percent as of 30 June. The acquisition of the 70 percent stake in SB Telecom will be financed using existing credit facilities, and Telekom Austria expects the deal to add to earnings per share from 2008. It will have no impact on the company’s stated dividend policy of distributing 65 percent of net income.

   

 MTS adds 1.07 million new subs in August (Russia)

Mobile operator group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) reported its total subscriber base reached 76.06 million users at the end of August. In Russia, MTS had 53.67 million mobile customers after adding 800,000 new customers in the month. MTS Ukraine added 110,000 new subscribers to reach 19.94 million, and MTS’ Uzbekistan operations ended August with 2.18 million customers after gaining 150,000 customers. In Turkmenistan MTS added 20,000 new users to reach a total of 270,000 and MTS Belarus ended August with 3.81 million customers and the company added 60,000 new subscribers during the month.

   

 Velcom is Telekom Austria’s target, says paper (Belarus)

Mobile Digital Communications (MDC, Velcom) is the target for Telekom Austria’s acquisition plans in Belarus, according to an unnamed telecoms expert cited in Austrian daily Die Presse. Austrian billionaire Martin Schlaff, with long-established business interests in eastern Europe, is rumoured to be involved in negotiations between MDC and Telekom Austria, according to the paper. Yesterday, Telekom Austria confirmed it is in talks on a potential acquisition in Belarus but did not give any additional details. MDC had 2.66 million mobile subscribers at the end of March 2007, giving it a 42.3% market share, behind market leader MTS Belarus. On 22 August 2007 100% of the previously state-run MDC’s shares were reportedly bought by Cypriot firm Samauwi Brothers (SB) Telecom.

   

 

 

 Telekom Austria confirms acquisition talks in Belarus (Belarus)

Telekom Austria Group has confirmed it is involved in talks over a possible acquisition in Belarus. The confirmation follows a report from news agency APA suggesting the operator could spend EUR 1.6 billion acquiring a mobile operator in Belarus. The company said it could not give further details at this time.
