ANC slashes interconnection fees in 2009 (Romania)

Mobile, Romania, Cosmote, Zapp, Vodafone Romania, RCS&RDS, ANC, Orange Romania, Termination FeesThe Romanian telecom regulator ANC slashes the interconnection fees for Orange Romania and Vodafone Romania to $0.063/min from $0.076/min commencing from 1 January 2009. From January onwards, ANC will also impose Cosmote, Zapp and RCS&RDS an interconnection tariff. Interconnection charges levied by Cosmote and Zapp will be lowered from 1 February 2009 to $0.0819/min from $0.103/min and $0.10/min respectively. Also starting from the same date, RCS&RDS interconnection fees will be reduced to $0.081/min. ANC also revealed that interconnection fees for the five operators will continue to be reduced to an equal level, most probably in 2009.

OTE plans Cosmofon sale (Macedonia)

Cosmofon’s Greek owner, OTE is planning to sale off the celco for USD336-USD402 million. OTE plans to sell Cosmofon following Deutsche Telekom’s acquisition of a strategic stake in OTE. The German incumbent also controls T-Mobile Macedonia and together with Cosmofon, they control 90% of market share. In order to avoid monopoly in the mobile market, DT must sell one of them off. OTE will start looking for a potential buyer once the Macedonian Competition Agency releases a document stating that the agreement between DT and OTE creates a monopoly on the mobile telephony market.
The divestment will take along with its equipment and national network.

European Commission clears the Deutsche Telekom’s acquisition of OTE (Germany)

The Deutsche Telekom’s purchase of OTE gets approval from the European Commission. OTE works as the fixed line in Greece and Romania and as a mobile operator, in name of Cosmote in Bulgaria, Greece and Romania.

The European Commission while investigating about the acquisition, no competition concerns were observed.
Deutsche Telekom’s CE Rene Obermann, sees the descision as an important milestone towards strategic cooperation between the two companies and expects an approval from local antitrust bodies in southeast Europe, including Greece in October.

Cosmote appoints two financial advisors for Cosmofon (Macedonia)

Cosmote slashes it’s roaming tariffs (Romania)

Cosmote, Romania’s mobile operator has slashed it’s tariffs of making calls abroad to be align to the EC’s guidelines.
The tariffs will be:

Making calls to numbers in other EU states will fall from EUR0.49 per minute to EUR0.46

Cost of received calls will drop from EUR0.24 to EUR0.22

OTE 2Q revenues up by 2.5% (Greece)

Cosmote’s continuous growth leads OTE (Greek operator) to post second quarter revenues of EUR 1.59 billion, up 2.5 percent from a year earlier. OIBDA improved 6.3 percent to EUR 578.8 million, and the OIBDA margin rose 1.5 points to 36.6 percent, helped by cost controls and Cosmote Romania turning its first profit. Net profit lifts 16.6 percent to EUR 159.3 million. Cash flow rose 26 percent to EUR 443.4 million. It anticipates the trends of the first half to continue in the rest of the year, with any declines from fixed-line operations offset by growth in mobile, said OTE.

Greece to be the most highly penetrated market of the world by 2010 (Greece)

Mobile market of Greece has reached a saturation point where there is no or little room for organic growth through new subscriber additions. In an order to taise the ARPU levels mobile network operators are encouraging prepaid users to migrate to postpaid plans and introducing mobile content and data. However, non-SMS mobile data usage is low, as attributed by the marginal amounts of revenue generated although the deployment of 3G\HSDPA networks provides the foundation for future mobile content services.

Operators serving Greece Mobile market are Vodafone Panafon, TIM Hellas, Cosmote, and Q-Telecom.

Notable highlights of Greece Mobile Forecast include:

In 2010, Greece will be the most highly penetrated market in the world. The wireless penetration level will increase from our projected 156.7% in 2008 to 173.3% in 2010.

The number of total subscribers in Greece will increase from 17.5 million in 2008 to 19.3 million in 2010.

The two largest operators in Greece will continue to be Vodafone Panafon and Cosmote. Cosmote will continue to increase its market share in the next few years. It will increase from 39.9% to 42.1% from 2008 to 2010.

Cosmote will enjoy a higher EBITDA margin at 40.3% and a lower ARPU of US$ 33.74 per month compared to Vodafone Panafon with 35.1% EBITDA margin and $34.43 ARPU per month.

Cellcos targets 6.1 million subscribers by 2009-2010 (Romania)

Since the launch of Romanian 3G operator RCS&RDS its customer base has exceeded 1.1 million in time span of 10 months. Mobile Market of Romania is a home for 5 wireless operator and the increase in number of subscriber is quite astonishing. At the end of 2007, firm reported 200,000 subscribers which has grown to 800,000 with the begining of May. It is anticipated that customer total may surpass 1.5 million by the end of 2008. RCS&RDS says it now has networks in 180 cities across Romania.

In contrast to this rival cellco Cosmote says it is targeting 5.4 million subscribers by the end of 2008, up from 1.8 million at the start of the year and 4.6 million at end-June. According to a media report, Targets for end of 2009-2010 are 6.1 million and 6.6 million respectively.

Cosmote users enjoy the ups and downs of 3.5G (Greece)

Greece’s leading cellco by subscribers Cosmote has upgraded its 3.5G mobile network with HSUPA technology to give users in selected areas of Athens and Thessaloniki maximum theoretical upload speeds of 1.5Mbps. Simultaneously it has increased the peak HSDPA download speeds accessible in the same areas to 7.2Mbps. HSDPA services are available to at least 40% of the population, whilst the operator claims total 3G/3.5G W-CDMA/HSPA population coverage of over 80%. Also this week, Cosmote is introducing new mobile broadband internet/data packages, including a plan specially for students allowing 5GB of up/downloads for EUR25 per month and an unlimited volume option for EUR49 a month (EUR29.50 under a promotion running until the end of September 2008).

Deutsche Telekom to pay €2.5bn for OTE stake (Germany)

Deutsche Telekom has agreed to take a 20% stake in Greece’s incumbent phone company in a €2.5 billion/US$3.9 billion deal and hopes to increase the stake even more, an Associated Press report said.

The Bonn-based company said it would buy the shares in Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation, or OTE, from Greek private equity firm Marfin Investment Group for €26 (US$40.46) apiece.

MIG currently holds just shy of 20% of Hellenic Telecom, making it the company’s second largest shareholder, with slightly more than 98 million shares. Greece’s government is the biggest shareholder, with just more than 28% of the company.

The report also quoted Ovum analyst Mike Cansfield saying that on the surface the deal would seem odd (see AnalystWire for full comment from Cansfield) “Why would DT look to take over the Greek incumbent? The answer is not to look to Greece, but OTE’s mobile investments in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, and Albania,” he said of Cosmote, Hellenic’s mobile phone unit. Hellenic also holds a controlling share of Romtelecom, the former Romanian telephone monopoly, the Associated Press report said.

The deal is subject to approval by Deutsche Telekom’s supervisory board and the Greek government.
