Telefonica O2 Europe has announced live femtocell experience trials in the UK in partnership with NEC and Ubiquisys, targeting a commercial launch of the technology by early 2009. The UK’s trial of femtocell technology has begun an initial period of live testing in February. If successful, the trial will be rolled out in greater numbers across the UK in the summer. NEC has supplied an integrated service centred around Ubiquisys ZoneGate femtocells. Femtocells are designed to improve indoor 3G mobile-broadband coverage by re-routing data from mobile networks and onto wired DSL connections, building mobile coverage from the inside out. O2 also launched trials in the Czech Republic this month, on the back of successful tests that have been carried out in Madrid by Telefonica since last year.

Telefonica has reduced its mobile data charges for its European customers. O2 businesses and Movistar in Spain will implement a range of new data roaming tariffs aimed at consumers travelling within Europe, while for business travellers, a new roaming bundle provides worldwide access to data at a price equivalent to EUR 1 per MB. Both prepay and postpay consumers will, starting from early February, pay no more than EUR 0.32 to send an SMS from any EU country, representing a reduction of up to 49 percent on current prices. The new rate will apply to all customers by April. O2 and Movistar business customers can use 50 MB of data on any roaming partner network worldwide for a flat monthly fee of EUR 50. The package is available now in Spain, the UK, the Czech Republic and Ireland and will be introduced in Germany in the second quarter of 2008. From March 2008, mobile laptop users will be able to monitor their data usage in real time via their ‘Connection Manager’ software, while all roaming customers will automatically receive a text message containing SMS, data and voice pricing information. In addition, O2 and Movistar customers will not incur penalties if their phone selects a non-preferred network.
