 Taiwan Mobile launches GPS service in cooperation with Garmin (Taiwan)

Taiwan Mobile has launched a customized GPS service in collaboration with Garmin.

The service will be available to the TWM’s mobile subscribers for a one off payment of NT$1,200 (US$38.5) or 13 monthly payments of NT$100 and they will be able access to the GPS service on more than 70 handsets.

TWM aims to boost the revenues generated by mobile VAS to 10% of its total revenues by year-end 2008 compared to 9% currently.

According to further reports, Garmin and TWM may extend their current cooperation to include Garmin’s forthcoming Nuvifone GPS-enabled phone.

   

 Garmin enters handset market with Nuvifone

Portable navigation device maker Garmin International has announced its entrance into the mobile phone market with the Nuvifone touchscreen device. The Nuvifone is a 3.5G mobile phone, featuring a 3.5-inch touch screen, web browser and personal GPS navigator similar to Garmin’s Nuvi product line. The handset also provides Google local search, and access to Garmin Online, an online service offering constantly-updating information. Other multimedia functions of the Nuvifone include a built-in video camera, MP3 and MPEG4/AAC. Garmin anticipates that the Nuvifone will be available in the third quarter of this year.

   

 Tele Atlas waits for higher bid from TomTom

Digital mapping services provider Tele Atlas has indicated it will support a higher takeover bid from portable navigation device maker Garmin, if TomTom does not raise its earlier offer. Garmin has said it intends to make an offer of EUR 24.50 per share for the Dutch company, beating TomTom’s agreed offer of EUR 21.25 per share. Under the TomTom agreement, if Tele Atlas receives a superior proposal, TomTom has a right to match that within five business days. If TomTom chooses not to match the higher bid, then Tele Atlas intends to terminate the TomTom agreement and recommend shareholders accept the Garmin bid.

   

 Garmin makes higher bid for Tele Atlas (Netherlands)

Portable navigation device maker Garmin has come out with a rival bid for digital mapping group Tele Atlas. Garmin is offering EUR 24.50 per share for the Dutch company, beating an existing agreed offer from rival TomTom worth EUR 21.25 per share. Garmin said it expects to launch its offer before the TomTom bid expires in early December and that it has already secured financing. The offer values Tele Atlas at EUR 2.3 billion. Tele Atlas confirmed it had received the bid from Garmin and was still studying the proposal. Garmin said it is committed to maintaining Tele Atlas management and operations in the Netherlands and would continue to run the company as an independent entity.

   

 Garmin unveils navigation application for mobiles

Navigation device maker Garmin International has unveiled Garmin Mobile XT, a software service that turns selected smartphones with internal GPS into high-end Garmin navigators. The mobile phone application pairs the phone’s built-in GPS with Garmin’s software so that customers can navigate anywhere in North America or Europe. Garmin Mobile XT is pre-loaded on a microSD card that includes Garmin navigation software for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, or Europe. Garmin Mobile XT builds in features such as support for travel guides, topo maps and custom points of interest, as well as advanced features such as route planning with saved routes, custom avoidances and visible trip logs. Garmin Mobile XT also includes PeerPoints, a feature enabling users to send their position to any other phone as well as view and navigate to the location of other Garmin Mobile XT users. In addition to navigation, Garmin Mobile XT includes free access to Garmin Online. Garmin Mobile XT is available now for a suggested retail price of USD 99 in the US. Garmin Mobile XT products purchased in the US include maps of all North America. In Europe, Garmin Mobile XT includes map data for 30 countries in Europe.
