Reliance Globalcom, part of India’s Reliance Communications, has agreed to connect its multi-terabit next-generation DWDM undersea cable system at a landing station in Cyprus operated by alternative telco PrimeTel. Triple-play broadband provider PrimeTel is constructing a submarine landing station in Yeroskipos and has secured 5Gbps of global capacity with an option for future upgrades. PrimeTel hopes that the project, scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, will attract corporate business to Cyprus by increasing international broadband capacity, providing alternative routing and lowering prices.

Following the revelation by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) that the skyline of Abuja is littered with over 2000 illegal masts and base stations by GSM providers, the House of Representatives Committee of FCT and the ad hoc committee probing the poor quality of service rendered by the companies will meet with officials of the FCDA and the GSM companies.
Leo Ogor , the chairman of the ad hoc committee confirmed to THISDAY that the companies and the officials of FCDA were to appear before the committee yesterday to shed more light on the roles they played.
Ogo who said he was surprised that the FCDA and the GSM service providers were singing different tunes, wants to bring together all the parties involved and sort out the issue once and for all.
“Look, we can’t continue to sing different tunes, we invited the NCC, the service providers on different dates and their revelations are now conflicting. After our meeting with the FCDA last week there is the urgent need to bring everybody to the public hearing.
There is the urgent need to thrash it out. They are just toying with Nigerians. Abuja is worst hit. We are representing the people and must solve the problem. Its over five years that the GSM service operation into Nigeria , but it has never gone beyond the initial euphoria that heralded the coming of GSM in Nigeria ”
The chairman of the House Committee on FCT Honourable Attai Aidoko Ali who represents Ankpa/Omalaboro Federal Constituency of Kogi state confirmed to THISDAY that his committee wanted to find out how MTN, Globalcom, Celtel and other CDMA companies installed over 300 illegal masts and base stations without the connivance of the FCDA officials.
“The Abuja skyline is now littered with all sorts of masts.. The masts did not grow over night. How can they just install it without approval from the relevant authorities. The most worrisome is that only 34 was approved for Celtel and 44 for MTN but they have over 200 illegally installed.” Ali stated.
The lawmaker told THISDAY that the issue of collocation by the GSM service providers is non negotiable.
” It is the way it is done in most modern cities. They must collocate and save us this embarrassment. They can not dictate to us what they will do. They have to follow the rules and play by it.
The FCT has provided 219 locations in Abuja . The GSM companies must follow the instructions. All they want to do is just do things their own way. But since there is a regulatory body, they must follow the instructions “he said
According to Ali , the House will not hesitate to ask the relavant authorities to pull down the illegal mast after a thorough investigations to find out how they came about the instalation in the first place , he said while using the NAtiona Assembly complex as an example where there are over five masts withing the place when a collocation could have saolved the problem.
