Motorola is in collaboration with Bharti Airtel to offer MOTOMUSIC. MOTOMUSIC is a mobile music service on the web and WAP only for Airtel Mobile users across India. MOTOMUSIC offers around 350,000 downloadable and its content includes ringtones, full songs, wallpapers and music video clips. This will provide a complete mobile music ecosystem for Airtel consumers to enjoy their favourite tunes anytime, anywhere by accessing the online music portal The service also offers MUSIC ID application on Motorola phones, which enables users to identify recorded songs and their music artists, and download the songs instantly from the MOTOMUSIC website, according to the Company.
“It gives us great pleasure to build on our relationship with Bharti Airtel. Through this alliance, we will complement our strengths to offer consumers a wide choice of rich media content through a simple, easy-to-use service,” Faisal Siddiqui, director, product and solutions, India and South West Asia, Motorola Mobile Devices, said.
“We are delighted to partner with Motorola to bring MOTOMUSIC to the Airtel user. We recognise the intuitive appeal of music and believe that this will further underline our commitment to enrich the experience of all Airtel consumers,” said Sanjay Gupta, chief marketing officer, mobile services, Airtel.
This service will be available to all Bharti Airtel customers using ‘Airtel Live’ through GPRS settings on their mobile phones. Currently, fee for full song download is Rs.20 and for wall papers is Rs. 15.

In near future Indians will be able to view TV channels on their GPRS-enabled mobile phone.
Time Broadband Services (TBSL), has reportedly announced that it would launch its services in India later this month to provide 15 digital entertainment and news channels on GPRS enabled mobile phones.
“Everything is going digital and everyone is on the move. With this new concept, you do not have to wait to get back home to catch the breaking news. It will be there just a click away from you,” TBSL senior vice president Irfan Khan said.
The channels will be entertainment based for both Bollywood and news based channels, with it’s target growing from 15 to 99 channels.
According to Khan, the company has teamed up with the Film and TV Producers Guild of India for entertainment content, with the Indian Music Industry (IMI) for music content and with Sony Pictures for Hollywood content.
“For news-based content, we are planning to tie up with news agencies like Reuters,” he added.
This service is already launched in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and China.

Digitel, Venezuela, has reported that it has rolled out a total of 80 new GSM base stations in the first six months of this year, with deployments in every state in the country.
The cellco says it covers at least 85% of all communities nationwide, giving an overall population coverage of over 90%, and it is aiming to reach as near to 100% coverage as possible by the end of the year. According to a database, in full-year 2007, Digitel added a total of 260 new GSM/GPRS/EDGE base stations to reach new areas and improve the quality of voice and data transmission in existing coverage zones.

Data Roaming services by Celtel Nigeria in many hot spots of the world including the United States of America, United Kingdom, Ghana, and Kenya.
Others include South Africa, the United Arab Emirate, Sri Lanka, and Gabon, Senegal and Kuwait. Customers of Celtel can now do data roaming on a number of mobile networks in several countries of the world such as Cingular in the USA, Cincinnati Bell Wireless, USA, Orange in the United Kingdom, DU of UAE, Vodacom in South Africa, Tigo (Millicom) of Ghana, Celtel Gabon, Celtel Uganda and Celtel Kenya.
Econet Wireless, Zimbabwe, has received long-awaited approval from regulatory authorities to launch commercial 2.5G and 3G services. It is noted that the cellco rolled out a 900MHz/1800MHz GPRS platform in the middle of 2007 but failed to announce a full commercial launch, whilst it was also ready to roll out a W-CDMA network by the end of the year. Econet’s officials confirmed that GPRS had been installed for a year but had been awaiting approval from regulator POTRAZ for the usage of frequencies. Econet will now launch commercial GPRS services within the next four to eight weeks, whilst 3G could be introduced in the first quarter of next year.

MTS, via its Turkmen subsidiary Barash Communication Technologies Inc (BCTI), has announced the launch of GPRS and EDGE based services. According to Dmitry Shukov, director of the Turkmen operation GPRS services are currently available to just 300 Turkmen businesses, but will be extended to residential customers next month. Furthermore, the company claims to have applied for frequencies to develop WiMAX services.

Singapore-based info-communication company StarHub has chosen Tektronix Communications’ GeoProbe, APM (Advanced Performance Monitoring), Orion and Beamer solutions have been selected by StarHub to satisfy its need for a roaming management solution that could enable online monitoring and alarm notification of its GSM and GPRS/3G networks that inter-work with overseas operators’ networks for roaming services.
Complementing GeoProbe, APM, Orion and Beamer is Tektronix’s roaming application, also part of the Unified Assurance suite. StarHub is using the roaming application to track GPRS/3G and GSM activity and performance for all subscribers by inbound and outbound roaming partners. This will aid StarHub in reducing churn, maximizing high value “visitor” revenue streams and improving roaming partner relationships.

Telecom Italia has inked a pact with Acotel Group subsidiary Noverca to enable the latter to launch as a MVNO over Telecom Italia’s mobile network. Noverca will acquire SIM cards, dedicated blocks of numbers, telecommunications services and data access on its GSM/GPRS and UMTS/HSDPA networks. The Alcotel subsidiary will offer services combining telecommunications, internet access and value-added services, such as the distribution of multimedia content, VoIP services, social networking tools and video surveillance. Electronic money and mobile banking services will be developed together with Intesa Sanpaolo, as part of the joint venture agreement signed by the bank and Acotel Group in December 2007. Noverca will function under its own brand and will establish its own marketing and pricing strategies. It will directly deal with contractual relations with consumers and businesses, whether prepaid or contract customers.

Sony Ericsson has unveiled six new handsets plus its new Xperia smartphone range at the Mobile World Congress. The first Xperia, the X1, will launch in H2. The handset is Sony Ericsson’s first Windows Mobile device, an arc slider with metal finish featuring a qwerty keyboard and large touch screen. The phone runs on GPRS/EDGE/HSPA networks as well as Wi-Fi, and comes with built-in GPS, 400 MB memory and the Nexperia panels system for customising menus. Sony Ericsson also launched two touch screen organiser phones, the G700 and G900, available from Q2. Both are GPRS/UMTS phones with organiser features, while the U900 features a 5 megapixel camera and Wi-Fi as well. In the Walkman range, Sony Ericsson showed the W980 with 8 GB internal memory. The HSDPA phone, available from Q3, has been paired with the new Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-77 headset. Sony Ericsson also released two new CyberShots, the C702 with GPS and a range of location-based services like Google Maps, and the C902 with 5 megapixel camera and 160 MB internal memory. The two camera phones will hit the market in Q2. Finally, Sony Ericsson also showed the Z770 clamshell, designed for easy, consumer web use. The EDGE/HSDPA phone in red, black or gold will be available from Q2.
