Sprint has announced the avilability of the latest Nextel Direct Connect phone - the Motorola Renegade V950.

 Vertu in talks with DLF to open it’s exclusive store in India (India)

The luxury brand in mobile phones, Vertu is planning to make it’s mark in India and is in talks with DLF, the country’s largest real estate company, to open up it’s first and exclusive store in India.

These luxury phones which are priced from Rs 3.57 lakh to as much as Rs 1.62 crore, are presently being sold in the country through luxury watch and jewellery stores in about eight cities, mostly through luxury hotels.

DLF executive director Rajiv Talwar has declined to confirm the talks with Vertu, saying: “An enquiry might have come which we cannot confirm at the moment. But DLF Emporio mall in Delhi will be the ideal location for the high-end luxury phone brand. Other luxury retail players have already started moving in the mall which will be up and running by next year.”

The Vertu buyers get a free one-year concierge service, Vertu Concierge, now available in India too, by which they can order any product at any time in any part of the world, free of (service) charge. The concierge service is free for a year, and comes with £950 yearly fee thereafter.

   

 3M’s mobile phone with LED illuminated projector by the year end

Ever imagined a mobile phones which will let you see the big picture? Well, this virtual life will come to reality this year end with the launch of built-in mini projectors.

3M’s LED illuminated projector is currently a prototype handheld device, that displays photos or films stored on the unit’s SD or Mini-SD card.

The projector has a brightness of around 8-10 lumens, and displays an image of up to 50inches, although with perfect lighting conditions, it’s possible to squeeze a 60inch screen out of the projector.

The projector’s VGA resolution image is striking.

Text from PowerPoint presentations is rendered sharply, photos are reproduced with lifelike skintones and colours with negligible detail loss. Bright images look slightly washed out, but the garish lights of the CES showfloor made it hard to block out ambient light in 3M’s tiny booth.

The projector is claimed to run for two hours continuously using a standard mobile phone battery. So, 3M envisages can be used for impromptu business presentations, or for quickly sharing photos or short videos with others.

Roberts says 3M is in talks with “several leading phone and camera manufacturers” although wouldn’t reveal names, but claims products could arrive on the market before the end of the year.

 Motorola to speed up 3.5G handsets outsourcing (Taiwan)

According to the Taiwan’s handset industry reports, Motorola to speed up it’s outsourcing of 3.5G handsets by teaming up with Foxconn International Holdings/Chi Mei Communication Systems for the ODM production of 3.5G handsets for 2009.

FIH/CMCS will be utlizing Qualcomm chipsets in the production of 3.5G handsets for Motorola, sources reveal.

The order came after Motorola already placed ODM 3.5G handset orders with Taiwan-based Qisda and Compal Communications, said the sources, noting that Qisda will start shipping 3.5G handsets to Motorola in September and Compal will follow suit in the Q4′08.

 Dual SIM mobile phone market estimated to grow at 25-30% (India)

The Dual SIM mobile handsets are set to rule the Indian market, after it’s huge success in China where it has captured almost 60% market share.

LG confirmed it’s entering into the Dual SIM category. “We will shortly venture into this category. By next year first quarter, we will be an active player in this segment. Though it is minuscule right now but the category definitely holds huge potential and is seeing tremendous growth,” says Anil Arora, business group head — GSM, LG Electronics India Pvt Ltd.
Nokia, too, is contemplating an entry into this segment, which it expects will be the future of the Indian mobile handset market.
According to industry estimates, 15% of the present market share is acquired by the dual SIM and will soon reach 25-30%.

“The market is huge in China where it has almost 60% share, but even in India it has huge potential. Everything depends on coming out with right product for the right segment by the right people. The target is the Indian replacement mobile phone market that is growing at a healthy pace,” says Rajiv Khanna, CEO of Meridian Mobile.

 Motorola leads the US mobile phone market share at 26% (US)

The mobile phone shipments in the US have experienced an increase of 5.3% increase in the Q2′08, as the mobile phone companies post strong results.

According to analysts, 41.9 million cellphones were shipped in the quarter, up from 39.8 million a year earlier.

Shipments are expected to drop, due to rising inflation and the consumers reduce their spending on luxury items. Even with a market that is at 80% saturation, consumers are buying replacement phones, which have become a key sales target.

Motorola, at 26%, manages to cling to its lead in the US market share. It had posted a wider loss of $346 million in the Q2′08, and has plans to seperate its mobile phone unit from its other operations. Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, commented that “Motorola is not yet out of the woods, but these are encouraging, early signs of stabilization.”

Worldwide, Motorola saw its market share fall to the third position.

LG came second in the U.S. market as it sold 16.8 million phones in the H1′08 and aims to hold 22% of the market by the end of the year.

Whereas, RIMM, BlackBerry gains a double digit market share for the first time in the US market as the firm is offering an increased the number of handsets.

Collectively, the quater seemed to appear better than expected for the mobile phone manufacturers as Nokia reported a leap in sales whereas Samsung Electronics Co. said its handset sales helped boost its profit 51%.

 3G mobile phone prices to be halved (India)
