Google announces the sale of unlocked Android Dev Phone 1 for $399. This Google device will be the first Android-based phone to be both SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked and available to the public. The unit will be available in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Hungary and will work with any GSM carrier.

Hungary based mobile operator Pannon and T Mobile together with financial institutions FHB and MPP launch a mobile payment service, dubbed as MobilePayment. The service is available to Pannon and T Mobile postpaid and prepaid customers who have a bank account at FHB. Service users can pay for products or services directly via their mobile phones to merchants joining the system, either in the shops or with remote access, as well as pay mobile phone bills, or top-up their mobile accounts, or transfer money to other customers using the system.
Hungary launches two mobile licence tenders to boost competition

The Hungarian telecom regulator, National Communication Authority, launches two mobile licence tenders and a proposal to provide mobile infrastructure development. The two mobile licence will be valid for 15 years. According to Daniel Pataki, President NHH, the following descision has been taken in order to boost mobile market competition in the country. He also adds that though the country has a mobile penetration of 108%, countyry’s 20% population still doesn’t own a mobile phone and the price competition has been stagnant among the existing mobile operator i.e. T-Mobile, Pannon and Vodafone.
Looking at the present financial scenario, Pataki adds ‘We have called the tender now as market conditions could turn even more unfavorable, since nobody can tell when this global financial market turmoil could end’.
TDC cancels HTCC (Invitel) sale (Hungary)

TDC is dropping the plan to sell its US-listed Hungarian alternative fixed line operator, Hungarian Telephone and Cable Corp (HTCC), due to the economic crisis in the global market. TDC has put the unit up for sale in July but is descending its proposed sale of its 64.6% stake saying it ‘has determined that, at this time, in light of the current period of uncertainty in financial and economic conditions, HTCC will continue to pursue its strategy as a publicly-traded company while continuing to consider initiatives to enhance shareholder value.’ HTCC is operating under the brand name Invitel in Hungary and is the nation’s second largest operator having more than a million customers.
Magyar Telekom shows keen interest in Telekom Slovenije (Hungary)

Magyar Telekom says that is still has a keen interest in purchasing Telekom Slovenije. Magyar Telekom Chairman and Chief Executive Christopher Mattheisen said, “In case of Telekom Slovenia, a lot depends on the price. We’re still keen on Telekom Slovenia but not at any price”.
He also added that the operator, in order to expand, is looking for acquisitions in markets like Ukraine, Kosovo, and Bosnia.
Magyar Telekom plans a job cut of 300 employees by Q1′09 (Hungary)

Magyar Telekom, Hungary, plans to have a job cut wherein it’ll shun off 300 employees by Q1′09 at a cost of $27.41 million. The job cut will bring about an annual saving of 1.8 billion forints in staff-related expenses. The Hungarian operator has also agreed with unions on a 5.6 percent wage increase from April 1, 2009.
Pannon has announced availabilty of high speed 3G in 360 towns (Hungary)

Pannon, Hungary, has announced that the availability of high speed 3G/HSPDA network in 360 town and villages across Hungary.
The cellco has been assessing the coverage of the network to accommodate strong demand for mobile broadband internet services. The Hungarian mobile operator has experienced an impressive rise in the data volumes carried over its HSDPA network in the past year.
It’s initial HSPDA roll out was done in Budapest, since then Pannon extended coverage to the Lake Balaton region and begun implementing major upgrade projects in other parts of the country, including Heves county. The latest expansion took in the town of Hatvan to the east of the capital.

Hungary’s mobile market, like that of its Central European counterparts, has matured with penetration rates surpassing 100%. Services are offered by three mobile network operators, T-Mobile, Pannon (Telenor), and Vodafone all of which are majority or wholly owned by Western European operators. However, all is not well for the mobile operators, with ARPU levels in decline for some time although the latest data shows the end may be in sight, with falling ARPU levels showing signs of stabilisation. Mobile broadband usage is increasingly coming into focus, with a growing variety of affordable mobile broadband plans coupled with mobile content and applications available via EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA networks.
Notable highlights of the Hungary Mobile Forecast 2008 - 2010 are:
- Total subscribers in Hungary will increase from 11.8 million in 2008 to our forecasted 13 million in 2010.
- It is estimated that wireless penetration levels in Hungary will increase from 115% to 126.2% over the forecast period of 2008 - 2010.
- Market shares of major operators will remain roughly the same over the next several years in Hungary. T-Mobile, Pannon (Telenor), and Vodafone will continue to have approximately 43.7%, 36%, and 20.8% of total subscribers in the country.
- The three operators will continue to see similar ARPU levels. The ARPU levels in Hungary are generally increasing, and they will be in the range of US$ 30 - US$ 32 across operators in 2010.
iPhone 3G launches in 20 countries on August 22

The iPhone 3G will be launched in twenty more countries on August 22. All the operators concerned have made their formal announcements. 10 countries are Latin American.It is predicted that SingTel will also join the mix, but the reports are yet to be confirmed.

Telenor shows interest in HTCC stake bid (Hungary)

Norwegian operator Telenor plans to bid for 68% stake in US- listed alternative operator Hungarian Telephone and Cable Corporation (HTCC). The second largest local fixed line telecoms operator in Hungary (HTCC), which markets itself under the Invitel banner, has around 700,000 customers; it acquired Invitel for $640 million in early 2007.
Major reason to bid for HTCC stake is its sales. Apart from Telenor other bidders in the first round are Mid Europa Partners and GMT Communications Partners.
