Salvadoran cellco Intelfon plans to invest USD2.4 million in expanding geographical coverage of its network in the north of the country, reports BNamericas, quoting local daily La Prensa. The company expects to install 30 new base stations and expand its capacity to provide value added services. It is also considering launching operations in neighbouring Guatemala in 2008. La Prensa reported the company’s CEO Rafael Salomé as saying that Intelfon has been experiencing 20% monthly growth on average since its launch in November 2005 and that has led it to consider expansion possibilities. ‘The idea is that for 2008 we will have 150 base stations giving us greater coverage and enabling us to provide more benefits to the users,’ Salomé said. Intelfon, under the banner RED, uses iDen technology that allows push-to-talk-over-cellular (PoC) communication with other RED users. It is based on CDMA standards, but incorporates GSM architecture that allows international roaming.
