MiPhone, Jamaica, adopts it’s parent America Movil’s popular brand name Claro from today. America Movil had acquired MiPhone’s parent company Oceanic Digital Jamaica last year for USD70 million.
We are pretty excited. What we are doing right now is relaunching the brand and you will start seeing the stores changing and you’ll start seeing killer products like the new Apple iPhone next month. The plan right now is to announce to Jamaica that we’re changing from MiPhone to Claro,’ says MiPhone marketing manager Noel Esty.

Ireland’s Independent newspaper reports that America Movil is set to undertake significant network investment in Jamaica, doubling its number of cell sites by April 2008, in order to ensure newly acquired cellco MiPhone can better compete against Digicel and Cable & Wireless. The Mexican giant acquired MiPhone in August 2007 at a cost of USD70 million. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, at the end of September 2007 Digicel claimed almost 70% of the cellular subscriber market in Jamaica, with Cable & Wireless taking 26% and MiPhone just 4%.

MiPhone preparing EV-DO launch for this year

Telegeography writes….Jamaican wireless operator MiPhone plans to roll out EV-DO services as early as August this year, according to BNamericas which cites the company’s senior VP of corporate development Alex Hill. Using equipment provided by ZTE, MiPhone will target a mass audience with the 3G offering. Currently MiPhone has around 200,000 subscribers, a small percentage of which currently use data services.
