Uganda Telecom, Uganda’s leading telecommunications provider, has launched a user friendly Voice SMS service nationwide. With this launch, all prepaid and postpaid subscribers of Uganda Telecom can send Voice SMS to any mobile subscriber in Uganda for a fixed price of 150 UGX (approximately USD 0.08). The process to send Voice SMS is very simple, and both on-net and off-net subscribers (who are not on Uganda Telecom network) can listen and reply to the Voice SMS messages sent by a Uganda Telecom subscriber. This enhanced Voice SMS solution has been made available by Kirusa, world’s leading vendor of Voice SMS and a leading developer of mobile value-added services.
Uganda Telecom subscribers can now communicate faster, more easily and with emotion, without needing to type in text messages, fixing typos etc. To compose a Voice SMS, a Uganda Telecom subscriber just presses ‘*88′ followed by the number of the person to whom he wishes to send the message, speaks for 30 seconds and disconnects. The recipient is alerted with a normal SMS beep, gets a text SMS notification and can retrieve the Voice SMS by clicking on a DirectListen(TM) link embedded in notification. A subscriber has the option to hear new and old Voice SMS, and can reply and forward messages. An added advantage here is that the recipients who are not on Uganda Telecom’s network can also listen and reply to the Voice SMS sent to them.
To make the service available to its subscribers, Uganda telecom has incorporated Kirusa Voice SMS service integrated with the NMS Vision Server media platform into its mobile network.
Uganda Telecom subscribers will be charged 150 UGX (approximately USD 0.08) to send a Voice SMS. Listening to a Voice SMS for the first time is free of charge. For listening to old messages Uganda Telecom subscribers will be charged 50 UGX (approximately USD 0.03) per message. For replying to a Voice SMS, a Uganda Telecom subscriber pays a nominal charge of 150UGX.
Hans Paulsen, Chief Commercial Officer of Uganda Telecom said, “With this launch, we aim to introduce the world’s best Voice SMS offering to our subscribers. I am confident that Ugandans will find this mode of communication much simpler to use. Compared to standard text SMS, Voice SMS is a more exciting way to deliver short messages as it eliminates the arduous typing and presents convenience of sending out a message to a friend or loved one. The launch of Voice SMS is part of our strategy to introduce user friendly, reliable and cost effective communication medium to Ugandans.” He further added, “We were impressed with the ease that Kirusa demonstrated during Voice SMS implementation in our network. We chose Kirusa for its proven capabilities with deployments across the globe.”
Inderpal Singh Mumick, CEO of Kirusa said, “We are pleased to have teamed with Uganda Telecom to bring the Voice SMS service to market, the first in East Africa.” He further added, “Voice SMS is more than just a value added service. It has been adopted by millions of mobile users in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and has evolved into a core messaging product for carriers across the globe, delivering increasingly robust ARPUs. With added applications complementing Kirusa Voice SMS, there is a huge marketing and advertising potential for Voice SMS in the African market.”

Mobile and MaxOnline hubbers are set to enjoy even greater benefits as StarHub launches ‘Home Zone’, the world’s first commercially-available 3G femtocell service. 3G femtocell is a portable cellular access device that connects a user’s 3G mobile phone directly to a MaxOnline-enabled router in the home so that users can make voice and video calls and send SMS over StarHub’s cable network from their mobile phones.
StarHub is making all local outgoing voice, video calls and SMS free for customers using the ‘Home Zone’ service, ensuring that users, who make frequent mobile calls and SMS from home, can enjoy significant cost-savings on their mobile phone bills.
“As the operator that frequently delivers new innovations to the Singapore market, we see tremendous potential in the ‘Home Zone’ service which uses the 3G femtocell technology. While services such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP) have been available for some years, these are restricted to VoIP-enabled mobile phones. The beauty of the 3G femtocell technology is that all 3G-enabled phones are supported and customers do not need to purchase special handsets to take advantage of it,” said Mr Anil Nihalani, Head of Mobile and Communications, StarHub.
‘Home Zone’ supports all 3G mobile usage. While all outgoing local voice calls, video calls and SMS are free - MMS, IDD calls, mobile downloads, mobile surfing and other GPRS activities conducted over the mobile device will be charged at standard published rates. StarHub mobile customers on eligible plans can even make Free IDD 018 calls to 18 destinations using the ‘Home Zone’ service. Local call charges will however still apply.
As an added bonus, besides his/her own mobile number, the subscriber can nominate up to three other StarHub mobile numbers to a white-list that will be recognised by the ‘Home Zone’ service. This means that up to four StarHub 3G mobile users can call out simultaneously over a single ‘Home Zone’ connection, each of the callers being able to enjoy the same benefits.
Mr Nihalani said, “The ‘Home Zone’ service demonstrates the true benefits of hubbing with StarHub. By extending the ability to use the ‘Home Zone’ service to immediate family members, hubbing families who are our 3G mobile and MaxOnline customers, will be able to get more out of it with better cost-savings and convenience.”
The ‘Home Zone’ VAS is offered at a monthly subscription of $30 (without GST). However, customers who subscribe to the VAS from now till 31 December 2008 can enjoy a special 50% discount for 12 months. The ‘Home Zone’ device will be offered on loan free of charge to ‘Home Zone’ users.

Virgin Mobile South Africa, raises its data and SMS tariffs for both its prepaid and post-paid subscribers, eliminating off-peak rates. The rise in tariffs mean that Virgin’s peak-time tariffs are quiet lower than its competitors. On the other hand, it also means that users will not benefit from low off-peak rates. Virgin Mobile’s all-day rate is now 60c/SMS. MMSs are charged at a flat rate of 75c each and its per-MB data rate is set at 60c in contrast with Vodacom’s 4U charging 80c/SMS in peak times and 35c in off-peak times and Pay-as-you-go MTN subscribers are charged 75c/peak-time SMS while off-peak SMSs cost 35c. For data users, Vodacom and MTN charge around R2/MB for out-of-bundle data usage, their in-bundle rates for 2 GB or more drop to R0.19/MB. This is in comparison with Virgin Mobile’s flat rate of R0.60 per megabyte.

Redemption centres, which include Etisalat shops around Nigeria and selected branches of Oceanic Bank, Sweet Sensation and Big Treat Supermarket, have since seen a large turn out of subscribers in a bid to redeem their Easy Starter prepaid packs.
An innovative prepaid Product, ‘Easy Starter package’ is designed to give subscribers the power to enhance as well as maximize both air and talk time.
The Vice President, Marketing, Etisalat Nigeria, Wael Ammar, said, “The Easy Starter is the first prepaid package from Etisalat with a robust range of services geared towards giving subscribers value and optimized talk time. The innovative package comes with unique features that easily distinguish it as the brand of choice; they are the homezone tariff plan, Receiver Pays (or Call Collect) and Recharge Others. It is important to note that subscribers can enjoy all these services by default as they are automatically activated as soon as the subscriber joins the network.”
The USP of this package is the ‘Homezone’, a tariff plan that allows subscribers the opportunity to select the areas where they make the most calls as their homezone in order to enjoy lower tariffs.
According to Mr. Wael Ammar; “our tariff structure is the simplest in the history of telco in Nigeria and it is designed for the ease of our customers who remain a driving force in all we do. With Easy Starter, our subscribers have just two levels of tariff; either you are in your homezone or out of the homezone. The difficulty associated with having to determine how much a call costs is removed as it is either 40 kobo in the homezone or 50 kobo outside the homezone per second. This is practical innovation, simplicity at its best and unique to this market.”
‘Receiver Pays’ is an another feature from Easy starter package, that makes possible for the receiver of a call to pay for the call if they so desire.
The Call Receiver on the network will be prompted and requested to accept or reject the collect call. Callers are only required to dial 268 followed by the mobile number to call.
Other exciting services include SMS, MMS, Call Me Back service, ring back tunes and so on and so forth. Data and Internet services can also be used by WAP, GPRS and EDGE enabled phones. There are also supplementary voice enabled services such as voicemail and network enabled 5 person conference calls.
