 Celcom posts a rise of 9.9% in revenues from Jan-Sep’08 (Malaysia)

Celcom reports a rise of 11.1% to RM1.877 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) at the end of 30th September 2008, in comparison to RM1.690 billion in 2007. The operator posts a rise of 9.9 per cent to RM4.135 billion in revenue from RM3.763 billion. The revenue growth is mainly due the company’s segmented marketing approach, particularly within the youth and Malay segments. He said its subscriber base also grew 23 % to 8.25 million despite the highly competitive environment after the introduction of Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
In context of MNP, he said Celcom planned to focus on enterprise segments, which was already showing an overwhelming response. “This is one area that we do well. We have also introduced a campaign for the enterprise segment,” he added. The launch of 1+5 campaign by the company in third quarter was a part among its strategies to increase subscriber base through MNP.

 DoT & Govt. calls for MNP bid (India)

Department of Telecom (DoT) along with the Government of India has invited proposal for the licence of Mobile Number Portability (MNP). The service enables mobile phone users to retain their mobile numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another. According to the authorities, the license would be implemented in each intra licensed service area (LSA). The licence holder will operate the MNP system based on ‘build, operate and owned basis’. It shall take into account traffic study, services to be given, etc. for dimensioning of its Mobile Number Portability Clearing House (MCH), Number Portability Data Base (NPDB) and database query response system. The licensee shall have to arrange all those equipments and solutions (including tools and testers etc.) from time to time which may be required for efficient working, authorities further added.
Moreover, each successful bidder have to pay the entry fee and furnish Performance Bank Guarantee of Rs 10 million and Financial Bank Guarantee of Rs 20 million before grant of MNP license.

 MNP in Kenya soon, says CCK

The Communications Commission of Kenya is making move to introduce Mobile Number Portability (MNP) that allows cell phone users to switch from one operator to another without having to change their existing numbers.
According to CCK Director General, Charles Njoroge, number portability will enhance competition in the current multi-operator environment by providing consumers with the flexibility to choose the desired service provider in a seamless manner and without having to worry about the prospect of having to be out of contact with business associates, friends and family.
It is anticipated that the operations will be expensive as administrative and infrastructure costs is included in it.

 MNP in Turkey kick starts with 50,000 porting requests

Almost 50,000 subscribers requested to change their service provider on the very first day of implementation of Mobile Number Portability (MNP). Nearly, a thousand applications reportedly were completed within the first few minutes of implementation. Turkcell, Avea and Vodafone Turkey have instigated various promotions programme aiming to retain existing subscribers and add more clients to their kitty. It is anticipated that up to seven million porting requests will be made now that users can switch networks while keeping their original phone number.

With the implementation of MNP in Turkey, Turkish mobile operators have launched promotional campaigns aimed at an estimated 10 million mobile subscribers who want to take advantage of this service. According to a media report, Avea and Turkcell organised music concerts as well as launched incentives programs to attract new users. New Avea prepaid customers will receive 250 credits, which can be used to dial all service providers, and new postpaid subscribers will be able to subscribe to the ‘300 to everywhere’ package, which includes 300 monthly anytime minutes for TRY 30 per month. The portability campaign by Turkcell started with the slogan ‘Your number will remain the same, its quality will be Turkcell’. A new incentive program has been initiated by Turkcell under which users can speak for free to other Turkcell members for two days a week. This offer will be available to the first 1 million Turkcell members who register by SMS between 8 November and 28 December. Vodafone Turkey in the same line launched a campaign and offers corporate users free calls and minutes between corporate numbers. According to Vodafone, it will launch more campaigns soon.

 South Africa rated as world’s fourth fastest growing mobile market

According to a recent surevey, South Africa has been rated as the world’s fourth fastest and Africa’s fastest growing mobile market, with a coverage on 80% of the total population, nearly 39 million users, representing a market value of US$2.4 billion. The three operators Vodacom, MTN and Cell C, have been in a cutthroat competition against each other since the launch of MNP in the market last year.
“South Africa offers an extraordinary penetration rate in this burgeoning market, one of the highest in the developing world,” said the report.

   

 Turkcell’s ARPU increases to 13.1%, churn rate ascends to 6.2% in Q3 (Turkey)

Turkcell announces its third quarter results. The cellco reports a rise of 50.5% in net profit year-on-year to USD603.8. Its revenue was up19.3% to USD2.06 billion, and EBITDA ascended 8.6% compared to the same period last year to USD837.8 million. Turkcell subscriber base reaches to the mark of 36.3 million at the end of the quarter, churn rate mounts to 6.2%. Average revenue per user (ARPU) grows to 13.1% from a year earlier to USD17.3.

 Azerbaijan introduces MNP

Azerbaijan introduces Mobile Number Portability for the first time for country’s mobile phone users. Iltimas Mammadov, country’s deputy minister of communications and information technologies, says after it recieved proposals from various operators, “There will be a decision in a few days. The service will come available within 3 months after the decision. Preparation for the service and to bring it inline with the national legal framework is ongoing.”
