Avea (Turkish cellular operator) is in association with mobile solutions firm Vringo to instigate what they say will be the world’s first carrier-led paid-subscription video ringtone service. The new service will be instigated over the cellco’s Patlican mobile internet portal which targets the youth market. Presently, Vringo is providing a library of over 4,000 video clips, including a range of music video content. CEO of Vringo, Jon Medved, said, ‘Analysts estimate that 50% of ringtone revenues will come from video ringtones as early as 2010; it’s our mission to make that a reality.’

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) in association with Astro All Asia Networks of Malaysia and Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG) set up a new mobile content services company. The firm reportedly has a capital of USD74.8 million, will be 51% owned by STC, with Astro holding 29% and SRMG 20%. According to STC, the firm will have a potential customer base of 70 million.

Bouygues Telecom (French Mobile operator) is in agreement with German mobility solutions provider Jentro Technologies for the supply of its Berlitz Mobile platform, an advertisement-funded navigation and local search solution for mobile media. The navigation solution will be promoted as a Berlitz Mobile branded solution, powered by Jentro and this will offer free turn-by-turn navigation to Bouygues’ mobile subscribers. Additionally, local search functionalities and innovative content features such as travel and language guides is also provided by Berlitz Mobile.

NTT DoCoMo announces the formation of a jont venture with Avex Broadcasting & Communications, a Japanese music and movie entertainment company, to produce and have an on-demand distribution of video content packaged for the mobile phone environment.
This will enable the users to dowload or stream the video content, which has nearly 47 channels like movies, news etc via NTT DoCoMo’s “mopera” mobile Internet service.
The service is scheduled to operate by March 2009 with capital of JPY3.5 billion and capital reserves of JPY3.5 billion, 30% from DOCOMO and 70% from Avex Entertainment (AEI).
The company will develop content specially for small screen phones giving special consideration to scripting, editing, photography, etc tailored for the mobile phone environment.
Docomo will be providing with the IT infrastructure, mobile technologies and experience with video content for mobile users. AEI will be doing the job for which it is known, content creation, artist management and services centered on intellectual property.

According to a report, Ad-funded social networking will contribute the bulk of mobile user-generated content revenues by 2013. The report further reveals that the total value of the UGC market will grow from nearly $1.1 billion in 2007 to $7.3 billion in 2013. The number of active mobile social network users will rise to 730 million from 54 million in 2008, with the Far East and China leading the charge. By 2013, the personal content delivery services will account for more than 9 billion downloads, with 32 percent of them ad-supported. The data costs must be reduced outside of bundles to stoke casual use of mobile social networking and dating services.

Motorola reveals the findings of its research into the customers technology decisions and media consumption habits of the ’Millennial’ generation (16-27 year olds). The study covered Millennials from five countries in Europe and the Middle East found that young adults are passionate about being in control of their rich media content and are heavily influencing older generations. This study was conducted to analyse the Millennials’ viewing habits and how they move and share their content across devices. Results shows that Millennials themselves engage with new technologies and services also they actively influence their parents’ adoption habits.
Joe Cozzolino, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility EMEA, said that technology is the lifeblood of this generation. Millennials feel that their personal lifestyle would change dramatically without internet access. It is not surprising therefore to see their influence on technology purchasing for the home. By understanding the needs and desires of this generation, Motorola is able to design and customize solutions for our customers that enable them to deliver rich media experiences to today’s and tomorrow’s consumer, Cozzolino added.

The number of people downloading content on their mobile phones has been growing drastically. The people dowloading, prefer to pay for the downloaded content rather than getting it for free with highly-personalised advertising.
According to a survey, the adults would prefer to pay for an otherwise free download if it gave them immunity from advertising.
It is seen that the generation that’s often accused of expecting free content, is one most willing to pay for mobile downloads. 35% of 16 to 24-year-olds said they would be prepared to pay for downloads instead of free d-supported content, compared to only 17% of 35 to 44-year-olds.

According to a market research, players spanning the value chain from operators to media aggregators to music, video and game providers will spend more than $8 billion on tools to create, edit, manage and load content onto mobile devices by the end of 2008. As the existing content management systems mainly focus on delivering media to specific device types. However, within the next five years the scenario will change from discrete content delivery systems to full-blown systems promising reusable content optimized for multi-channel delivery.
It is anticipated that over the next few years tools that unlock the value of content in the digital age by formatting and managing content for device independence would be required. Content value will increase as it becomes reusable and will enhance the investment in developing the next generation of content management tools.
