Citi Handlowy, Polkomtel, an operator of the Plus mobile network, and mPay, an acquirer, together with Zarzad Transportu Miejskiego (the Warsaw Transport Authority), have launched a “Pay With Your Mobile” service that allows customers to use their mobile phones to make payments directly from their bank account with Citi Handlowy. This service will be first offered to passengers of the public municipal transport in Warsaw who will be able to purchase ZTM time-limited tickets in this way. The “Pay With Your Mobile” service has a chance to soon become the first common standard for mobile payments in Poland.
“The ’Pay with Your Mobile’ service is a real breakthrough in the mobile payments market, thanks to this historic agreement. It is the first time a bank, a mobile network operator and an acquirer have agreed upon a common business model. Thanks to this agreement, the customers who have a bank account with Citi Handlowy and a mobile phone with Plus are able to make mobile payments in an easy and convenient way. The innovation in mobile payments offered by us can become a mass-market service, and a standard that others will follow” explains Sonia Wedrychowicz-Horbatowska, Global Consumer Group, Poland Country Business Manager, and vice president of the Management Board of Citi Handlowy. “Citi Handlowy is the first bank to allow customers to pay with their mobiles directly from their bank account. Consequently, we once again prove that we have been consistent in implementing our strategy, in which the main focus is on customer satisfaction. We create solutions which combine innovation with simplicity of use and convenience”
“Plus is the first GSM operator in Poland which has been offering its users a possibility to use mobile payments for over a year now. At present, as befits an innovator in the mobile telecommunications market in Poland, in cooperation with Citi Handlowy and mPay, we are entering a new key stage of this project, and at the same time we are setting future directions for development and the market standard” said Jaroslaw Bauc, President of the Management Board of Polkomtel S.A. “We believe that, thanks to the fact that the service is linked directly to a bank account, mobile payments will soon become very popular and Poles will quickly discover the numerous advantages they offer. It should also be added that Poland is the first country in Europe where such cooperation has been successful for the benefit of customers”
“Thanks to Zarzad Transportu Miejskiego (the Warsaw Transport Authority) the new service has a chance to become deeply embedded in the consciousness of the residents of Warsaw. Passengers using the public municipal transport are offered a new convenient method to pay for time-limited tickets. To purchase such a ticket they will no longer need to look for a kiosk or carry cash. All they will need is a mobile phone. Thanks to the possibility to use a mobile phone to pay for a public transport ticket, passengers will be able to buy tickets at any time and any place” said Leszek Ruta, Director of Zarzad Transportu Miejskiego.
The “Use Your Mobile to Pay for a Time-Limited Ticket Directly from Your Bank Account” service is convenient and easy. There is no need to install additional applications and it is available to all mobile phone users irrespective of the mobile phone model they have.
Today mobile payments “Pay with Your Mobile” are already accepted in more than 1,500 points of sale. In the first stage of the project the service is available mainly in Warsaw. Safety limits have been set for payments made from accounts with Citi Handlowy with the use of a mobile phone. A single mobile payment cannot exceed PLN 300 and the daily limit for mobile payments has been set at PLN 500. The “Pay with Your Mobile” service is free of charge and customers will be able to activate it by signing an electronic payment instrument agreement with the bank in Citi Handlowy branches or by calling CitiPhone.
“mPay is the first acquirer in Poland which launched a service in 2007 allowing customers to pay for purchases with the use of a mobile phone. The mPay company, as a creator of the innovative Polish solution, attaches great importance to the fact that our partners – Polkomtel and Citi Handlowy – have invited us to take part in a joint initiative which sets new trends in the mass payments market. We perceive this initiative as an important step towards the integration of the major entities in the mobile payments market. Our goal is to deliver solutions facilitating the mass use of a phone as a payment instrument. It should be noted that as far as this modern form of mobile phone use is concerned we are among the leading European countries” said Konrad Luczak, President of the Management Board of mPay S.A.

ClairMail, Inc., the leader in 2-way mobile phone-based customer interaction, today announced the latest release of the ClairMail System that includes a premier mobile web solution optimized for the iPhone. The iPhone solution includes the comprehensive mobile banking and payments functionality found in ClairMail’s traditional mobile web offering — account management, fund transfers, bill payments, ATM/branch locators and more — presented on the iPhone’s rich user interface.
ClairMail’s highly secure mobile web solution possesses the intelligence to adjust its user interface based on the capability of the mobile device. If a customer accesses the mobile web from an iPhone, for example, the user interface is presented in a style and format appropriate for the iPhone. If a customer accesses the mobile web from a different device, the user interface is presented in a format appropriate for that particular device — all from the same mobile web URL.
“As iPhone use continues to rise, it becomes increasingly important for financial institutions to offer a convenient, secure and easy-to-use mobile banking and payments solution that leverages the rich user interface capabilities of the iPhone,” said Joseph Salesky, CEO of ClairMail. “Along with numerous other enhancements in our new release, iPhone optimization will appeal directly to iPhone-owning bank customers, supporting our objective of delivering exceptional consumer adoption and usage for financial institutions.”
ClairMail’s newest release delivers new features and functional enhancements throughout the ClairMail System. Its latest release introduces functional support for Microsoft SQL Server and for bill pay integration via OFX; in addition, ClairMail provides functional enhancements to its already rich offering in terms of customer support, systems management and reporting.
ClairMail is the first and only solution provider capable of delivering 2-way mobile banking and payments functionality on all mobile phones across all three user interface options — messaging, mobile web and client applications. On one platform with a single implementation, the ClairMail System seamlessly and securely integrates with a bank’s systems of record and provides bank customers with a comprehensive suite of 2-way mobile banking and payment services. The ClairMail System incorporates a powerful Event Engine that can easily handle the potential transaction volumes from banks of any size and deliver real-time, 2-way Actionable Alerts™.
“Nearly six out of ten smartphone owners use a browser to conduct mobile banking services, and the Apple iPhone is setting consumer expectations for what a smartphone should look like and be capable of doing,” said James Van Dyke, Founder and President of Javelin Research. “Under current market conditions, the browser provides a logical foundation for mobile banking, with text-based services as an obvious complement because they provide a means to send dynamic, real-time alerts.”
About ClairMail
ClairMail is the only comprehensive 2-way mobile platform for banking, payments and card services. Deployed either on-premise or as a managed service, ClairMail optimizes any mobile phone for 2-way customer interaction. Only the ClairMail System offers 2-way mobile banking, payments and card applications that utilize any phone’s existing messaging and mobile web software and extend the capabilities of third-party client applications. On one platform with a single implementation, ClairMail empowers financial institutions to generate and deliver 2-way Actionable Alerts to their customers and provide easy and immediate account management, secure transactions and no-hold customer service. Unlike other 1-way, proprietary and inflexible point solutions which lack the application intelligence to generate 2-way alerts, the ClairMail System is a turnkey, standards-based 2-way offering that seamlessly and securely integrates with existing systems, delivers the fastest time to value and provides an alternative to more costly channels like call centers and IVR. Founded in 2004, ClairMail is headquartered in Novato, Calif. The company is privately held and funded by Norwest Venture Partners, Outlook Ventures and JAFCO Ventures. Motorola announced that the company has launched a comprehensive mobile commerce solution for financial and retail merchandising needs. The solution, consisting of an M-Wallet and back-end management platform, has been deployed by Union Mobile Pay (UMPay), a leading mobile payment company established by China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) and China UnionPay. Motorola’s first mobile commerce deployment in China marks a significant milestone in its global M-Commerce initiatives.
Motorola’s M-Wallet solution provides enhanced user interface with secured and reliable service as compared to existing technologies based on Short Message Service (SMS), Interactive Voice Response (IVR), Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). Consumers can personalize financial needs such as account inquiries, money transfers, bill payments, utility payments and e-ticketing on their mobile phones, which will eliminate the need to go to banks or carry bank cards. In addition to mobile banking, the platform also provides business-to-consumer (B2C) solutions for merchants that include merchant membership cards, electronic couponing and prepaid cards.
In addition to the end-user mobile solutions for banking and merchandising needs, Motorola’s mobile commerce offering also includes a back-end management platform. The back-end management platform, part of the Motorola’s Service Delivery Framework called GAMA (Global Application Management Architecture), is interoperable with back-office network elements for OSS/BSS for mobile network operators, financial institutions and merchants.
“The M-Commerce market is rapidly evolving,” said T.K. Ng, General Manager of Motorola Global Services, Home & Networks Mobility, Motorola China. “Solutions like M-Wallet provide network operators, financial institutions and merchants with distinct advantages, giving customers convenience, speed and simplicity, allowing them to shop or perform bank transactions whenever and wherever they want. The M-Wallet solution deployment for UMPay underscores our commitment to making M-Commerce a reality. Not only does our flexible end-to-end solution simplify end users’ day-to-day tasks, but it also streamlines electronic transactions and optimizes the customer management processes for service providers, financial institutions and retailers.”
The M-Wallet solution with K-Java technology for UMPay’s Mobile Wallet is Motorola’s first M-Commerce platform launched in China. In 2007 UMPay’s mobile payment platform reached 50 million registered users. The new solution with K-Java technology will further strengthen UMPay’s leading position in supporting M-Commerce by enriching end user experiences. Besides bill settlements and fund transfers, the M-Wallet solution also allows CMCC’s subscribers to purchase lottery and tickets as well as participate in mobile games via an interactive interface.
“We are the leader in offering a mobile payment platform in China, and we see tremendous value in our relationship with Motorola to further strengthen our position in the market,” said Zhang Bin, managing director of UMPay. “With Motorola’s expertise and experience in M-Commerce, we can create new solutions and services that address the needs of customers, bringing easy to use, secure and reliable services to them.”
Mobile users only need to download and install the M-Wallet application on their mobile phones that support Java technology, and register their banking accounts to the mobile phones via UMPay.
The Motorola Global Services team in Beijing works closely with UMPay to develop user interfaces and create new features for mobile services. The team also develops and supports the back-end management platform, ensuring its smooth and reliable operation with the mobile network and banking systems.

Vodafone Group launches its mobile money transfer pilot scheme transacted between UK and Kenya, focusing onto increasing its vitality in the growing industry and among its potential customers. The UK based group, is in a deal with the Kenyan biggie Safaricom tagged with Western Union money transfer services.

Vodafone reportedly said that the service will enable the subscribers to send remittances from Western Union stores directly to Safaricom mobile subscribers in Kenya, often in minutes. Those users can then either withdraw the money from one of 4,000 M-PESA agents in Kenya, or forward it on to another mobile phone. The pilot scheme will be instigated in Reading, UK.

Vodafone, Safaricom and The Western Union Company announced that they will partner to pilot a cross-border Mobile Money Transfer (MMT) service between the U.K. and Kenya. This service will enable customers to send cross-border remittances from select locations directly to Safaricom mobile
subscribers in Kenya generally in minutes.
The initiative uses Western Union’s trusted global “hub” for processing cross-border remittances. It builds on the success of M-PESA, a mobile money transfer service in Kenya offered by Vodafone and sister company Safaricom, which has attracted over 4 million customers since its launch in March
2007.
The pilot will take place through a select number of Western Union(R) agents based in Reading, Berkshire. Consumers can send funds to any Safaricom mobile subscriber in Kenya in a matter of minutes. Receivers can use their funds in a variety of ways, including visiting one of 4,000 M-PESA agents in Kenya to withdraw their cash, or forwarding it on to another mobile phone in Kenya.
“The successful take-up of M-PESA in Kenya has clearly demonstrated the demand for easily accessible, secure cash payment services in emerging markets,” said Nick Hughes, Vodafone’s Head of International Mobile Payments. “Our partnership with Western Union allows M-PESA subscribers to receive international remittances and builds on the demand we have already seen domestically in Kenya.”
“This program aligns a global leader in money-transfer services, the world’s largest mobile operator group, and arguably one of the most impressive success stories in mobile money,” said Matt Dill, Senior Vice President, Western Union Digital Ventures. “In offering M-PESA users the opportunity to receive funds from abroad for the first time, these three companies are changing the way money moves around the globe.”
Michael Joseph, CEO of Safaricom, said, “This is another great step for M-PESA and will benefit many Kenyans all over the world. International remittances form a significant part of the total income for some Kenyans, and the partnership with Western Union will provide Kenyans with an opportunity to receive small values of cash from abroad in a fast, safe and affordable way.”
There are many benefits of using mobile phones for micro-transactions in a country like Kenya, where few people have bank accounts and over 10 million people have mobile phones. Furthermore, increased global migration has led to a significant increase in the flow of funds from expatriate migrant workers who send money home. Last year, for example, Kenya received approximately USD1.3bn in international remittances.
Western Union, together with brands Orlandi Valuta and Vigo, has a combined network of more than 365,000 Agent locations worldwide in 200 countries and territories. Vodafone is the world’s largest mobile operator by revenue and has recently expanded the M-PESA service to Tanzania and Afghanistan. Safaricom is Kenya’s leading mobile operator and has had unprecedented success with its M-PESA service.

HP announced that NTT DOCOMO, a world leader in 3G and multimedia services and the largest mobile operator in Japan, has deployed a standards-based media server from HP to reduce costs and shorten time to market for new services.
NTT DOCOMO is currently migrating its 54 million customers to the HP OpenCall Media Platform, which is designed to enhance the quality of voice-activated services. The server supports NTT DOCOMO offerings such as voice mail services, customized ringback tone services and interactive voice response services. The HP OpenCall Media Platform is designed to support many of NTT DOCOMO’s multimedia services.
Integrated within a core network node of NTT DOCOMO, the HP solution consolidates a variety of services onto a single platform to increase efficiency. With its 20,000 audio ports, the HP OpenCall Media Platform handles existing demand – and can be scaled up in a cost-effective way to meet future needs.
As a software-based Internet Protocol (IP) media server, the HP OpenCall Media Platform can take advantage of industry-standard technologies such as VoiceXML and Session Initiation Protocol. As a result, NTT DOCOMO is able to significantly reduce the complexity of developing new applications – and reduce the time needed to bring new services to market.
“The HP OpenCall Media Platform is an open, proven media server that helps us reduce internal costs – and provide our customers with more responsive service,” said Yukichi Saito, director, Service Support Node Development Group, Research and Development Center, NTT DOCOMO. “During deployment, HP worked very closely with the NTT DOCOMO team to meet our aggressive timeline for launch.”
“NTT DOCOMO is showing that commercial technologies, optimized by HP for telecom, can reduce costs and accelerate delivery of new services – without sacrificing carrier-grade performance and reliability,” said Steve Dietch, vice president, Marketing, Communications and Media Solutions, HP.
HP OpenCall Media Platform is deployed by more than 150 operators in 52 countries.
HP builds comprehensive solution
HP worked with NTT DOCOMO to build a complete solution around the media server, including management software, storage products, hardware and integration services.
The HP OpenCall software runs on the HP BladeSystem Carrier-Grade Platform with the Linux operating system. Storage is based on industry-standard HP StorageWorks EFS CGW and XP10000 Enterprise Virtual Arrays. Management functions are handled by HP Operations Software. HP provided consulting and integration services to integrate the solution into NTT DOCOMO’s network.
More information on the HP OpenCall Media Platform (HP OCMP) is available at www.hp.com/go/opencall/ocmp.

Movius Interactive Corporation, a global leader in messaging, collaboration and mobile media solutions, today announced that MTN South Africa has rolled out VoiceMail Xpress service to all MTN ‘Pay as you Go’ customers as part of their latest messaging system upgrade. This new service, enabled by Movius’s next generation messaging platform Versera ICE, gives callers to MTN subscribers more choice in message notification by allowing them to either leave a voicemail or SMS message.
Previously prepaid subscribers had to choose between two options; regular voicemail or an SMS notification service (called VoiceMail Lite) which sent subscribers information about missed calls but had no ability to record a message. VoiceMail Xpress brings these two services together. Now when a subscriber is unavailable, the caller is given the choice to either leave a voicemail message or to simply send an SMS with their phone number indicating who called. VoiceMail Xpress improves communication and therefore the overall value of MTN’s service to its customers.
VoiceMail Xpress is perfectly suited to a mixed text and voice market such as South Africa, where there are over 42 million(1) mobile subscribers, all of whom use SMS on a regular basis. With a simple interface and no need for user guides or passwords, it is also ideal for emerging markets where adoption challenges may have existed with traditional voicemail.
Donovan Smith, General Manager, Consumer Segment, MTN South Africa, commented, “VoiceMail Xpress makes our customers’ lives easier and gives them greater choice in communication. This new capability from Movius enables us to continue to lead the market with innovative messaging solutions to meet the various, unique needs of our market.”
“In such a competitive market as South Africa, the ability to offer choice is a great differentiator. This alongside the capability to encourage call completion and increase the chance of subscribers making a return call, makes VoiceMail Express a perfect solution for the region,” said Jay Whitehurst, Senior Vice President, Products and Technology of Movius Interactive Corporation. “With the ongoing success of our mobile messaging solutions, we are delighted that MTN South Africa has chosen to deploy our platform service to its subscribers.”
This new voicemail capability is one of a number of new services available with the latest software release (3.3) of Versera ICE. This new release also supports a new auto-attendant functionality and expanded message notification as well as a number of features to provide carriers great flexibility and control to meet the needs of the fast changing mobile telephony market.
