 Mobile data revenues to reach $100 billion by 2017 - Report

According to a new forecast issued by financial intelligence firm SNL Kagan, Mobile data revenues will increase by at an annual growth rate of 16% from $24 billion in 2007 to over $100 billion in 2017. The catlyst behind the expected growth is the recent launch of Apple’s iPhone and other smartphones. SNL Kagan’s forecast is completely in contrast sharply with the firm’s forecast that total wireless service revenues will experience barely a 5 percent CAGR over the same timeframe. According tot he firm’s estimate average data subscribers will grow at a CAGR of 5.8 percent to 249.5 million by 2017, comprising 77 percent of the total wireless subscriber base. During the same period, wireless subscriber totals will grow an average of only 2.9 percent per year.

SNL Kagan predicts wireless subscribers to reach 90 percent per capita penetration by 2017, which will lead to new data services emerging as the primary driver for revenue growth as market saturation nears. By 2017, 62 percent of all subscribers will clinch to messaging and mobile e-mail, mobile web users will grow from 18 percent of subscribers in 2007 to 52 percent of subscribers in 2017. SNL Kagan expects mobile video and TV to see a 10-year CAGR of 22.5 percent, followed by mobile music at 13.1 percent CAGR and mobile gaming at 12.7 percent CAGR.

 Mobile 3.0 to shut down (Germany)

German Mobile TV operator Mobile 3.0 is to shut down, claims Broadband TV News citing a report in the online edition of Handelsblatt. The company was awarded a nationwide licence for the provision of DVB-H services earlier this year. .

Earlier this year, the company was awarded with a nationwide licence for the provision of DVB-H services. The firm will cease operations, as subscriber take-up has been low due to a lack of handsets on sale equipped for DVB-H reception.

   

 ZTE Mobile Telecom and Telegent Systems team to deliver free-to-air mobile TV (China)

Telegent Systems, makers of TV mobile with its high-performance single-chip mobile TV solutions, has announced that it has been selected by Shenzhen ZTE Mobile Telecom Co.Ltd, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, to provide its free-to-air mobile TV solution for selected ZTE mobile handsets sold worldwide. Under the agreement, Telegent will be the exclusive supplier for the free-to-air mobile TV feature for a period of two years.

 MediaCorp to begin mobile TV trial with MobileOne Asia, SingTel Mobile and StarHub (Singapore)

MediaCorp, Singapore’s national broadcaster, will start off with a consumer trial of mobile TV using Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld (DVB-H) technology in partnership with local operators MobileOne Asia (M1), SingTel Mobile and StarHub, next month.

Close to 300 people will be included in the pilot which is scheduled to run for three months. Those taking part in the trial will be provided with a Samsung P-960 handset enabling them to access six dedicated TV channels during the three-month period, including coverage of the Beijing Olympics, Barclays Premier League action on StarHub’s Football Channel, the Singaporean Cantonese movie channel, Mei Ah Movies Channel, TVBS News and Channel News Asia. The pilot is being supported by Alcatel-Lucent and Gemalto.

   

 Intel to support development of China’s mobile TV standard CMMB (Taiwan)

According to sources in the Taiwan handset industry, Intel will support the development of China’s mobile TV standard China mobile multimedia broadcasting (CMMB) by supporting mobile Internet device (MID) and ultra mobile PC (UMPC) platform products supporting CMMB technology.

In line with Intel’s move, a number of IT makers, including Asustek Computer, Lenovo, Haier, Samsung Electronics and Fujitsu, are reportedly planning to launch CMMB-compatible MID or UMPC products, the sources indicated.

The upcoming CMMB-compatible MID/UMPC devices will feature a display ranging from 6- to 10-inch sizes and run on either Windows Mobile or Linux operating systems, the sources noted.

The development of CMMB MID and UMPC products follows the steps that have taken by Dopod, Samsung and Motorola in the development of CMMB-compatible handsets, pointed out the sources.

   

 Ericsson and Telecinco launch Formula One live via Mobile TV (Spain)

Ericsson has partnered with Boomerang TV and Spanish broadcast network Telecinco to launch Formula One live via mobile TV in Spain. Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson’s HyC will deploy a service including encoding, editing and transmission, to allow Boomerang TV and Telecinco to stream the Formula One races to mobile subscribers via live or scheduled repeat broadcast. HyC will also provide related systems integration services. Service users will be able to access personalised coverage and choose between live streaming and downloading selected moments of the races which are recorded, archived, managed and published automatically in real time.

 Mobile TV development a threat warns EU

BRUSSELS — On Wednesday, Europe’s mobile phone industry warned EU threats to slap price caps on cell phone movies and downloads would hinder the development of mobile TV.

EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said operators are making excessive profits on downloads, and she may force them to lower charges.

But the GSM Assn. said industry returns on capital employed were only 7% in 2007 — giving lie to claims of excessive profits — and price caps would bond the heavy capital investment needed for advanced 3G networks offering multimedia services at broadband speeds.

   

 

 Alcatel-Lucent collaborates with Telstra on mobile TV (Australia)

Alcatel-Lucent and Australia’s leading carrier Telstra announced the opening of a mobile TV handset testing service centre in Melbourne, Australia.
 
The facility was developed to support Telstra’s Mobile FOXTEL
TV service and will help ensure that Alcatel-Lucent’s MiTV application and the Mobile FOXTEL service are compatible with and operate smoothly on the handsets that Telstra offers to its customers.

The first Alcatel-Lucent facility of its kind outside of France, the centre represents a key step forward in bringing mobile TV-ready handsets to market quickly, dramatically reducing delivery time from up to three months to just 15 days.

Seen as key to ensuring the reliability and availability of new applications, the facility will test up to 100 UMTS 3G-enabled handset models a year including models from the all the major manufacturers to ensure their compatibility and suitability for the network and the anticipated applications and services to be offered.

Testing will involve Streamezzo, which supplies a rich media client software application to support Alcatel-Lucent’s MiTV application and Mobile FOXTEL service on the handsets being offered by Telstra.

   

 
 

 mobilkom joins mobile TV group (Austria)

Austria’s largest cellular operator by subscribers, mobilkom, has signed an agreement which will allow it to offer DVB-H mobile TV services. The deal has been reached with Austria’s DVB-H network operator, Media Broadcast, and its two operating partners, ONE and 3 Austria. The consortium was awarded a licence to offer mobile TV transmissions over UMTS 3G networks in February this year.

   

 

 BrT launches 3G using Gemalto USIM (Brazil)

Brasil Telecom (BrT) has selected Gemalto to supply it with Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) cards to support the launch of its 3G network this month. The manufacturer’s USIM technology will allow the cellco’s subscribers to access value added services (VAS) and benefit from higher levels of security on e-transactions when using their handsets. The USIM cards provide for global roaming and will support future offerings such as multimedia content distribution, mobile TV access and mobile payment.
