  • 11:18 am

A new entrant in European mobile phone market is soon going to give tough competition to the existing one. An independent distribution company called Hyundai Mobile Europe have been set up by Austrian distributor Leitz Austria. They are planning to sell Hyundai phones in 23 Western and Eastern European countries. The company was launched in September and has already marketed eight mobile phones in Austria. CEO of Hyundai Mobile Europe, Norbert Winkler said that they are confident that the company will break even in 2009 and reach a market share of between 3 and 5% within the next five years.

Hyundai mobile has inked agreements with Hungarian mobile operator Pannon and Slovenian mobile operator Mobiltel to market its mobile phones, while deals with mobile operators in Austria are expected to be finalised soon. The firm is planning to roll out between 10 and 15 mobile devices in the categories Basic, Music, Lifestyle, Innovation and Business.

  • 2:43 pm

Bulgaria will auction a mobile phone license on July 29 that will allow the launch of a fourth wireless operator in the European Union newcomer, a Reuters report said.

Some 12 companies, including Turkish mobile operator Turkcell, have expressed initial interest in acquiring the 20-year GSM license, the report said.

The tender will have a starting price of 38 million leva (€19.4 million) according to the regulator.

Interested suitors should express their interest in taking part in the auction by July 11.

The three current mobile phone operators in the Balkan country of 7.7 million people have so far not expressed interest in the tender, although initially Telekom Austria’s Mobiltel and Cosmote’s Globul considered it.

Bulgaria’s third GSM operator, Vivatel, part of telecoms BTC and owned by US insurance giant AIG, has not expressed interest.

Mobiltel says no to wireless number portability regs

  • January 10th, 2007
  • 2:09 pm

Telegeography writes…Mobiltel, Bulgaria’s largest cellco, has refused to agree to wireless number portability (MNP) rules proposed by the country’s telecom regulator the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC). According to local daily Dnevnik, the company announced its decision just a day before the deadline for approval of the procedure. The other two carriers, Globul and BTC’s Vivatel, accepted the terms, but under current legislation MNP cannot take effect unless all three carriers agree to it. Portability had been expected to become operational from 1 January 2007.

According to Nikolai Kichev, head of Mobiltel’s regulatory policy department, under the current telecom law the CRC has no regulatory oversight on the market for mobile telecom services. Mobiltel cited gaps in the effective legislation as the reason for its refusal to adopt MNP, claiming that the legislators gave wireless number portability a very brief and ‘fuzzy’ definition and failed to designate oversight to any state body. A new bill on electronic communications, which has yet to be adopted by parliament, will fill the existing legislative gaps, said Mobiltel. The company said it was ready to launch the service once the new bill is enacted.

LEADING MOBILE PHONE OPERATOR IN BULGARIA OPPOSES NUMBER PORTABILITY

  • January 10th, 2007
  • 11:34 am

Sofiaecho writes…Bulgaria’s leading mobile phone operator MobilTel refused to sign a mobile number portability agreement, drafted by GloBul and Vivatel operators.

Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) obliged the there Bulgarian operators to agree on number portability by January 10 2007 as it featured among the requirements for Bulgaria’s EU accession.

Portability enables customers switch between operators without changing their mobile phone number.

GloBul and Vivatel agreed on number portability on January 8 2007 and CRC accepted the agreement, Darik Radio said.

MobilTel boycotted the discussion. The company said that current Bulgarian legislation failed to determine the conditions under which the number portability should be introduced.

The company said that the other operators could introduce the new service for their clients but MobilTel preferred to wait  for the new communications law.

According to CRC the service could not be introduced before the three mobile phone operators came to an agreement.

Number portability introduction took an average of 29 months in other EU countries, Darik said.

MobilTel said that it could introduce the service by the end of 2007 if the new communications law became effective in January or February 2007. Only one to five per cent of MobilTel’s clients would use the new service, the company said.
