NCC, Nigeria has warned the owner of Mtel, to accelerate the action of restoring the operational activities so as to give the subscribers better services for their money.
The Vice Chairman of NCC, Ernest Ndukwe, also assured that the new parameters for regulation of the industry will be rolled out in coming months.
The executive vice chairman, who expressed dissatisfaction on the present state of Mtel, said “NCC is unhappy about the degrading fortune of the company.”
A regulatory body will be looking into the matter and the process to ensure a better compensation for it’s subscribers.

Montenegro’s mobile phone penetration rate rose to 174.6 percent at the end of January from 169 percent a month earlier, according to the country’s telecommunications regulator. The market share of ProMonte fell to 39.65 percent, T-Mobile increased its share to 34.3 percent, and M:tel was up to 26 percent. In comparison to December, the number of mobile telephony users was up 3.5 percent to 1.08 million. Compared to the same period last year, the number of users in January was 67 percent higher. The majority of the mobile telephony users in Montenegro, around 80 percent, are prepaid. A total of 103.4 million SMS messages were registered on Montenegro’s mobile networks in January, one third more than in December.

Comverse Technology has announced that Montenegro’s newest cellco, MTEL, has deployed its converged billing suite and various value-added services. MTEL, an affiliate of Telekom Srbija, began commercial operations in July 2007, just 75 days after acquiring licences to provide 2G (GSM) and 3G (UMTS) services. MTEL currently claims a 12.8 % market share with around 130,000 subscribers. Beside its wireless licences, MTEL holds a WiMAX concession, which it expects to launch commercially in October 2007.

MTEL, Montenegro’s newest wireless licensee, has awarded Greek equipment vendor Intracom Telecom a EUR4.5 million contract for the deployment of WiMAX infrastructure. The deal includes the turnkey supply and installation of WiMAX base stations and user terminals and will be completed over a period of four months. The contract also includes managed services for a year, with an extension option for another three years.
MTEL is owned by Telekom Srbija (51%) and Ogalar (49%). The company won the country’s third wireless concession on 9 May 2007 and is planning to launch its GSM/W-CDMA network next month. By the end of 2007 the company expects to have coverage of 90% of the territory and have achieved a 15%-20% market-share.
