The Russian industrial conglomerate AFK Sistema is reportedly considering the sale of its 50% stake in long-distance operator Multiregional TransitTelecom (MTT), clearing the way for a takeover by local telecoms firm Synterra.

The owner of the remaining 50% stake, Danish businessman Jeffrey Galmond, has already indicated that he is willing to sell. Sistema’s 50% interest is thought to be worth around $400 million. MTT claims a 6.8% share of the Russian domestic and international long-distance market, with revenues of over $1 billion in 2007.

The Russian long-distance operator Rostelecom has cut its call charges in the face of increasing competition. The former long-distance monopoly says prices could fall by as much as 30% for daytime inter-city calls, while regular customers in Moscow could even see reductions of up to 50% for calls from the capital to the regions, according to a report from the St Petersburg Times. ‘The reduction in the rate was made possible because of structural changes in the cost of international calls, Rostelecom chief executive Konstantin Solodukhin said in a statement. Rival firms such as Golden Telecom, MTT, Transtelecom and Synterra are slowly beginning to eat away at Rostelecom’s market share, while VoIP telephony services are also hitting long-distance traffic.

 MGTS revises long-distance regime

Moscow City Telephone Network (MGTS), the largest fixed line operator in the Russian capital, has introduced a new system for long-distance calls under which customers must now specify which carrier they want to handle the call. The new system replaces the previous regime under which all calls were automatically routed via the networks of former long-distance monopolist Rostelecom. MGTS customers are now asked whether they want calls to be carried by Rostelecom or by rival operators Multiregional TransitTelecom (MTT) or Golden Telecom. Though the revised system will be of obvious benefit the new entrants, Rostelecom says it intends to work hard to keep its long-distance customers. Local website C-News reports that it is planning to offer users a carrier pre-select option under which it will be the automatic choice for long-distance calls.
