Nortel has been selected as the official network infrastructure partner and a London 2012 tier one sponsor, by The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Nortel, as the official network infrastructure partner, will provide BT, London 2012’s communications services partner with the equipment to enable wide area networks, wireless LAN, call centre and fixed telephony infrastructure that is required by LOCOG to stage the games. It will also form a part of LOCOG’s technology team, which also includes Atos Origin, BT and Samsung and these organisations will help them in delivering the communications for the Games.
Nortel will receive exclusive marketing rights and usage rights to the London 2012 brand within its sector. Nortel is working with London 2012 and partners to reduce the environmental impacts of hosting the games by reducing the carbon footprint of the products they supply for the games. Nortel will also contribute to London 2012’s education programme by providing resources and training to students across the UK.

MTC, Namibia’s largest cellco, has invested nearly USD40 million (NAD300 million) in its network infrastructure in the year to date, in projects including raising SMS capacity, the deployment of a transmission backbone across several areas of the country and the replacement of central switching equipment with next generation architecture.
The company’s fibre-optic transmission network was extended in areas including the capital Windhoek, coastal regions and in the north, ending MTC’s long-standing reliance on renting backbone capacity from Telecom Namibia. The fibre project was implemented by Nera and Ericsson at a cost of NAD76 million this year. MTC also upgraded its radio access network and wireless broadband service capabilities, in partnership with Nokia Siemens Network and Motorola, at a cost of NAD88 million. MTC’s investments over the last 13 years total NAD1.6 billion.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to expand wireless services in the West Bengal region of India. The state-owned operator has put aside an estimated USD116 million (INR5 billion) for its plans, and is aiming to double its network infrastructure, increasing its cell sites from the 1,600 currently operating. WiMAX-based services are planned, and are expected to go commercial by 2009. BSNL has also announced that it expects broadband services to increase in popularity in the region, aiming to provide a further 100,000 connections by the end of the current financial year.
