KPN’s German mobile unit E-Plus plans upgradation of its 2G network in Germany in 2009, says E-Plus Chief Technology Officer Rafal Markiewicz. “E-Plus plans to invest, like in 2008, a high three-digit million euro sum in 2009 in expanding its network,” Markiewicz said. E-Plus, Germany’s third largest mobile operator by subscribers is unable to provide an EDGE network which allows faster mobile data transfer. “We decline (to do) battle with the competition on technical specifications but stay focussed on our customers needs,” Markiewicz said.
After the network upgradation, the operator aims to cover 30% of the German population with EDGE by the end of Q1′09 and by the end of 2009 E-Plus targets 90% of the population.Markiewicz says that E-Plus saves money in being behind the competition in upgrading and expanding its network.”Costs for 3G network equipment are now just around 20% compared with 2003 and more energy efficient,” he said.
