 Nokia to sell Symbian shares to Samsung (Finland)

According to a media report, Samsung Electronics has accepted Nokia’s offer to buy out its stake in software firm Symbian, and Nokia now has acceptances from all Symbian shareholders to sell their shares. Nokia Spokesman said, “They have accepted it”. Nokia said in June it would buy out other shareholders of UK-based smartphone software maker Symbian for US$410 million and make its software royalty-free to other phone makers in response to new rivals such as Google.
   

 O2 challenges Nokia argument!

The most expected phone of the year, N96, will not be stock by O2. It is believed that operator have allocated the majority of its subsidy budget to the Apple 3G iPhone for the remainder of the financial year, leaving it unwilling to subsidise the expensive Nokia device as well. O2 is under pressure to hit its iPhone targets otherwise it may loose its exclusivity with Apple.The operator said that there is no merit in stocking the N96 if its minimum line rental offer for a free N96 is higher than rivals’. According to an insider, ‘O2 wants to challenge the argument that it is impossible to grow in the contract market without  flagship Nokia handsets in its range.’ It has been known that there is no N96 in the range because there is little profit margin on Nseries handsets. Nokia N96 likely to be avaliable on O2 at Carphone Warehouse.

Much awaited Nokia N96 will be available in market soon.  First shipments of the Nokia N96 have started and it will be available with an estimated retail price of EUR 550 before taxes and subsidies. “The Nokia N96 is mobile entertainment at its best, a fitting flagship for our Nseries range.  Nokia ‘Comes With Music’ to provide unlimited music downloads (UK)

Nokia’s mobile music services, Comes With Music, which will be launching in UK next month, and in continental Europe and Asia next year.
Nokia is joining hands with mobile retailer Carphone Warehouse, which has more than 800 shops and is Apple’s sole independent distributor of the iPhone in UK, to stock the phone.
Nokia’s purpose is to compete with Apple iPhone and iTunes music service.
Carphone will start selling Apple’s 3G iPhone on pay-as-you-go deals from later this month.
Buyers of the Nokia handset will be getting unlimited music downloads for a year—2.1 million on launch, about quarter on iTunes—and will then have to pay a monthly subscription fee to retain the service.
Unlike other unlimited music services, if users choose not to buy a new device after a year, they can store and keep all the tracks already downloaded, and will also still be able to send texts and make calls.

 Nokia leads nearly 40% of the world’s mobile phone market (Finland)

According to the latest figures, Nokia rules nearly 40% of the world’s mobile phone market. Report reveals that Nokia sold 12.4 million mobiles in the second quarter of 2008. It is beleived that Nokia has the best portfolio in the market to deal with the slowing economy. It is quite well known that western population is burdened with inflation, Nokia is offering mobile phones at a ultra low cost to developing countries which is attracting the buyers. A report forecasts that Nokia sales to increase in the second half of 2008 because of its touch-screen device that will now be more high mid-tier than high-tier. Samsung and LG have both increased their market share by two per cent but Motorola and Sony Ericsson have been less competitive. Motorola’s market share dropped by 4.5 per cent since last year while Sony Ericsson’s decreased by 1.4 per cent. Moreover Motorola lacks 3G and hot applications such as GPS and good-quality internet browsing. The company is refurbishing its strategy to increrase the sales may have to cut prices as it lacks good features.

 Sluggish Mobile phone sales due to inflation!

According to a report, With the increase of economic difficulties growth in worldwide mobile telephones will slow sharply in 2008. Research unit predicted that 11 per cent growth in global sales to 1.28 billion units this year, down from a rise of 16 per cent in 2007. Further it said that sales reached nearly 305 million in the second quarter, a rise of 11.8 per cent on a year earlier. The report reveals that the economic environment continued to negatively impact mobile phones sales in both mature and emerging markets. Considering mobile handset maker giants, statistics shows that Nokia of Finland, sold more than 120 million telephones and augmented its share of the market to just under 40 per cent. Samsung had 15 per cent of the market with 45 million units sold, shooting far ahead of the former world number two, Motorola, on 30 million.

 Idea-Nokia together to offer N96 from september (India)

Idea Cellular is making an effort to pace up with the leading mobile giants Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar. Aditya Birla group has tied up with the world’s largest handset maker, Nokia to offer the N96 smartphone.  Handset will be available on Idea Networks from september.

Besides ‘N’ series, this partnership is extended to other mid and high-end range from the Finnish giant’s stable. The company said,  “Idea plans to introduce several attractive offers and innovative tariff plans, on various devices, starting with the N96, in early September, targeted at a varied cross-section of customers”. Idea Cellular MD Sanjeev Aga said “We are pleased to partner with Nokia in leading the industry to bring customers a complete suite of Idea communications, browsing, content and Internet services. This is a logical step for Idea to take, as it will further help augment our customer experience. These high-end Nokia handphones are known worldwide for their versatility and utility”. The alliance would offer consumers an option to choose from a wide range services from Idea Cellular on Nokia’s handsets, Idea Cellular MD Sanjeev Aga said.

 Nokia adds two new handsets to the Nokia N series (India)

Nokia has now been launching new handsets at a fast pace and now after bringing two new phones aboard, iPhone rival N96 and then the 8800 Carbon Arte, it now adds two more handsets to the N series-N79 and N85. Nokia launches these two mid range handsets at the time when Apple iPhone 3G is trying to make it’s mark in India.

Nokia N85 is a slider phone with 2.6-inch OLED screen, GPS with turn by turn navigation, a 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics and an FM transmitter. Nokia has also bundled 10 games and 8GB memory card with the phone.
Nokia N79 is a candy bar phone bundled with similar features like Nokia N85 with only different feature that it is bundled with a 4GB memory card.
