Portugal’s telecom regulator Anacom launches a new tender to award a fourth national mobile operator licence in the 450-470 MHz frequency band.
The new entrant will have to compete with TMN, Vodafone and Optimus, and the MVNOs as well. The interested bidders need to submit their bids.
The interested bidders may include Zon Multimédia, AR Telecom, Cabovisão, Oni and CTT.

Oni Communications cuts net loss, boosts EBITDA in H1

Portugal’s Oni Communications registered a net loss of EUR 10.2 million for first half 2007, a 55 percent improvement on the net loss of EUR 22.8 million registered in the first six months of 2006. EBITDA increased from just over EUR 3 million in the H1 2006 to EUR 9.5 million in H1 2007. First-half voice revenues remained constant at around EUR 30 million, with revenue from data and services reaching EUR 47 million, and equipment sales reaching EUR 2 million. Oni invested EUR 6.8 million in first half 2007, up 61.9 percent from EUR 4.2 million invested a year earlier.

Sonaecom agrees to buy Oni (Portugal)

Portugese telco Sonaecom said that its Novis Telecom unit has successfully completed talks with smaller domestic rival Oni Telecom and has reached an agreement to buy Oni’s residential and SOHO user business and related assets for EUR25 million (USD33.5 million). Earlier this year Sonaecom failed with an audacious bid to take over its much larger rival, Portugal Telecom.

Sonaecom and Oni confirm talks

Portuguese telcos Sonaecom and Oni Telecom have confirmed that they are in negotiations which could see the former acquire Oni’s residential and small business operations. Local newspaper Jornal de Negocios estimates the value of the deal at around EUR30 million. Earlier this year Sonaecom failed with an audacious bid to take over its much larger rival, Portugal Telecom.
