 HTC the chosen one for manufacturing Palm Treo Pro (Taiwan)

HTC will now be manufacturing Palm’s latest Windows Mobile-based smartphone, the Treo Pro, sources reveal.

Taiwan based HTC’s experience in manufacturing the Windows Mobile smartphones is the reason behind it’s selection for  manufacturing the smartphone for Palm, which is expected to launch in September.

   

 Palm sells two-millionth Centro smartphone (World)

Palm has sold its two-millionth Centro smartphone, and is now offering Centro in more than25 countries in North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

According to a recent data by AdMob, further echoes the momentum of Palm’s smallest, lightest and most affordable smartphone. According to the company’s Mobile Metrics report, Palm Centro leapt onto the list of mobile phones worldwide in May as the No. 8 device, and moved up in June to No. 7. AdMob cites the growth of inexpensive phones, such as Palm Centro, as a primary driver in mobile Internet usage.

   

 Palm posts net loss on restructuring charges (USA)

Palm reported a net loss of USD 9.6 million for its fiscal second quarter to 30 November, hurt by some USD 10 million in restructuring charges. The result compares to a profit of USD 12.8 million in the year-earlier period. The smartphone maker’s sales fell to USD 350 million from USD 393 million a year ago. Smartphone sell-through for the quarter was 686,000 units, up 11 percent year over year. The company said it’s working to lower operating costs and focus on products expected to contribute the most to long-term success. For the third quarter, it forecast revenues of USD 310-320 million and a net loss of USD 30-33 million, including USD 16-18 million in restructuring charges.

   

 Microsoft unveils mobile device manager server (USA)

Microsoft has unveiled new products for the mobile market at the CTIA trade show in the US. These include the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, a mobile-dedicated server that helps companies manage Windows Mobile phones similar to Windows-based laptops and PCs. The device manager provides for the delivery of applications to phones over the air, as well as managing the use of secure mobile VPNs. AT&T will support Mobile Device Manager for business customers next year, and Sprint will enhance its portfolio of Windows Mobile phones in 2008 to support Mobile Device Manager. In addition, new phones or updates to support Mobile Device Manager are expected to be available beginning in the second quarter of 2008 from HP, HTC, i-mate, Intermec, Motorola, Palm and Samsung. Microsoft also announced an alliance with the firm Enterprise Mobile, founded by IT entrepreneur Mort Rosenthal. Enterprise Mobile will build, deploy and manage custom-made systems for Windows Mobile and the Mobile Device Manager, that will work with a variety of mobile operators and phone manufacturers.

   

 Palm forecasts breakeven to small loss in Q1 (USA)

Palm has forecast a breakeven result to a small net loss for its fiscal first quarter to 31 August. Earnings per share are estimated at USD 0.00 to a loss of USD 0.01, on revenues of USD 359-361 million. The company expects smartphone shipments of 685,000 to 690,000 for the period. Profits were affected by USD 5.1 million in stock option expenses, USD 5 million in patent acquisition costs, USD 6.6 million for restructuring and USD 4.4 million from the sale of land. EBITDA is forecast at USD 3.4-4.4 million. Palm released the results as the figures may form part of an ongoing investor presentation to market its senior laon facilities. Full results for the company’s first quarter 1 October.

   

 Palm unveils Treo 500v for European market with Vodafone

Palm has unveiled its latest smartphone for the European market, the Treo 500v, to be launched exclusively with Vodafone from October. Running on Windows Mobile 6, the 3G handset has a full keyboard, large screen, new personal information management software, 2 megapixel camera and full messaging services covering SMS, MMS, instant messaging and push e-mail. It also highlights the Vodafone live! range of internet services, including access to Google Maps and eBay and a range of information services. The handset has 150MB of internal memory as well as a microSD card slot. The phone will come in either glacier white or charcoal grey. It will initially be available to Vodafone customers in Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the UK and Vodacom customers in South Africa.

   

 Palm and Digitel Offer Treo 680 Smartphone in Venezuela

Palm, Inc. and Digitel today announced the availability of the Palm Treo 680 smartphone in Venezuela.

 Windows Mobile 6 Phones, Platform Upgrades Already Available

As mentioned in the story before this, there aren’t too many Windows Mobile 6 device available Windows roughly five months after the release of the platform. Those looking to upgrade to a smartphone built on Microsoft’s latest mobile-device platform have a growing selection smartphones and Pocket PCs to choose from, however.
The oldest is the HP iPAQ 510 Voice Messenger (see top image), which was introduced in February, and is now available unlocked through HP. Sprint customers have the new Sprint Mogul by HTC. T-Mobile subscribers are bound to the T-Mobile Wing. The HTC Touch also runs Windows Mobile 6 and boasts an innovative iPhone-like touch screen technology.

If you love your current Windows Mobile 5 device too much to part with it—or you just aren’t ready to splurge on a new one—you may still be able to enjoy the benefits of Windows Mobile 6. T-Mobile is offering an OS upgrade for its T-Mobile Dash, and AT&T says it will release an update for the AT&T (formally Cingular) 8525.
Palm also plans to offer an upgrade for the Palm Treo 750, as does Samsung with the BlackJack.

   

 

 Palm posts sharp slide in Q4 results

Palm a sharp decline in net profit for the fiscal fourth quarter to 1 June, to USD 15.4 million from USD 27.2 million a year earlier. Total revenues dropped to USD 401.3 million from USD 403.1 million, while unit sales increased 43 percent year-on-year to 750,000 smartphones. For the full fiscal year, sales fell 1 percent to USD 1.56 billion, while net profit plunged to USD 56.4 million from USD 336.2 million. For the first quarter of the new year, Palm forecast revenues of USD 355-365 million, a gross margin of USD 36.8-37.3 percent and a net result between a loss of USD 0.01 per share and a profit of USD 0.01. Palm also plans to take a restructuring charge of USD 8-9 million for the recently announced reorganisation, which includes severance and facility closure costs. Of this some USD 6.5-7.5 million will be incurred in Q1 with the remainder in Q2.

   

 Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email Selected as Rambler.Ru’s Mobility Platform

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today announced that Rambler.Ru portal, one of the largest Russian Internet services and Email provider, has chosen Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email as
their strategic mobile email platform. Rambler will offer mobile email,
calendar, contacts and task synchronization services, powered by Nokia
Intellisync technology, to its more than 20 million subscribers of
Mail.Rambler.Ru. The service will be available as standard application
during the second half of 2007.
   

In Russia, only 5 percent of the population has broadband access* which
makes mobile email communication an important service for many residents.
The Russian telecommunication market is one of the world’s fastest growing
markets with a penetration of more than 100 percent**, meaning that
consumers are starting to use more than one SIM card.
