The new entrant to the Sri Lankan mobile market, Airtel, will now be launching its services on 12 Jan’09. Airtel Lanka will be the fifth incumbent of Sri Lanka and has triggered a price war among the local operators.

Zain introduces pre-registration drive for new subscribers (Ghana)

Zain Ghana launches a drive of pre-registration of numbers for the new subscribers on its network. The launch was mainly meant for mdia personnels, who were presently using other networks minus the network code, registered with the Zain 026 code. Mr Philip Sowah, Country Manager of Zain Ghana, noted that the drive was a nationwide one designed to make it convenient for prospective Zain subscribers to choose their own numbers, especially the ones they are familiar with on the networks they already use. “Interested persons can pre-register numbers of their choice on the Zain pre-registration website, ichoose.gh.zain.com,” he said. He said Zain was currently working on the quality of its network ahead of the actual launch of services “soon”. “Our network capacity is so huge we are scared in a good way - that there may not be enough subscribers to use the network in the short-term,” he said, assuring its prospective subscribers of enough network capacity to accomodate subscribers for next one and a half year.
He additionally said that Zain’s call tariffs are cometetive and would not be a part of the price war with others, ensuring better value to its subscribers.

Qtel slashes Hala’s calling charges (Qatar)

Qtel’s calling charges for Hala prepaid service are slashed as part of a massive overhaul. Subscribers of the PAYG system will benefit “immediately”, from today.
Since the launch of Hala service 2000, call charges are reduced drastically with the introduction of new services. Qtel in order to face competition with Vodafone Qatar, launch due in 2009, has been introducing a wave of promotions and special packages.
Looking at the level of competition in the country, introduction of new packages and services, when a new operator is yet to be launched next year, there can a face a price war in near future.
