 Quebecor splurges $800Mn to launch a wireless network (Canada)

Quebecor corroborated that it will spend as much as C$1 billion ($800 million) over four years to launch a wireless network and to compete with country’s three biggies of mobile phone companies. Its new high-speed packet access network should be up and running in 12 to 18 months, firm said. The above mentioned amount includes the cost of acquiring spectrum and operating licenses, building out the network and initial operating costs.” This project will employ around 1000 people at its Videotron unit over the next two years.

Nokia Siemens Network has been selected as its supplier for building the network. Presently, BCE,Telus Corp and Rogers Communication dominates the Canadian mobile market.

Quebecor (Media,Communications and printing group) is planning to spend up to $935 million to build out a wireless network over the next four years. But this amount includes the cost of attaining spectrum. It will spend between C$800 million and C$1 billion, including the C$555 million it is paying for the airwaves it acquired in its home province of Quebec in a government auction earlier this summer said, Quebecor.

Investors and analyst eyeing Quebecor’s next move in the building of a wireless network. It is anticipated that Quebecor could partner with another newcomer to Canada’s wireless market to create a fourth national wireless carrier. At present BCE Inc , Telus Corp  and Rogers Communications  is serving the Canadian market. In Quebecor’s list one of the potential partner is  privately held Globalive Communications Corp, which acquired spectrum across Canada except in the province of Quebec. The company is ready to reach out to “everyone” regarding potential partnerships said Globalive CEO Anthony Lacavera.
