Court has decided to delay its decision on the recent award of a mobile licence to fixed line operator RomTelecom. Although the Govt went ahead with the award but the legal challenge to the auction which had been launched by cellular operators Orange, Vodafone, RCS&RDS and Zapp/Telemobil. Argument from these firms is that the licence fee for the new permit is well below what they paid for their own cellular licences. RomTelecom is hailing the court’s decision to delay a ruling as a victory.
Germanos Romania signs a partnership with Romtelecom (Romania)

According to the director of the direct sales department at Germanos Romania, Eduard Cucu,Germanos has signed a partnership with Romtelecom to offer Romtelecom voice, internet and television services through its retail chain.
Germanos is also the direct sales partner of Cosmote Romania.
RomTelecom slashes LD tariff by 40% (Romania)

According to a local media report, RomTelecom is slashing long distance tariffs by more than 40%. call charges to other network in Romania will slice down by 17%. Joerg Zeddies, RomTelecom’s Executive Commercial Manager for the residential segment said that the new tariffs will encourage people to talk more with no extra costs.
Romtelecom sees lower profit in 2008, better 2009-10 (Romania)

Romanian telecommunications company Romtelecom is developing a three-year business plan which indicates a lower profit in 2008. Romtelecom CEO Yorgos Ioannidis told the ZiarulFinanciar that the business plan will lead to growth in 2009 and 2010. “We are building a business plan which provides for lower profit in 2008, in order to ensure growth over the next few years,” he said. “In order to follow a growth trend for the next three years, one has to make some sacrifices in the first year. Thus, 2008 will not be as good as 2009, and a lot worse than 2010.” The business plan will be submitted for approval to the company’s board of directors. Romtelecom reported a net profit of EUR 19.5 million during the first nine months of 2007, compared with EUR 41.6 million in the same period of 2006. The company revenues were EUR 649 million, also declining against 2006. Romtelecom’s priorities for 2008 are to increase its revenues and operating efficiency and to make investments in products which can reduce costs for the company.

RomTelecom launches flat-rate plans to entice business users (Romania)

RomTelecom is hoping to win more business clients through the introduction of a range of flat-fee unlimited fixed line calling plans. The plans, which range in price from EUR13 to EUR180 a month , offer business customers local and national calls at the fixed rate of EUR0.027 (USD0.037) per minute, regardless of the time of day. The operator says the flat-rate plans offer discounts of up to 46% on its normal calling rates.

RomTelecom speeds up to 6Mbps

RomTelecom has announced that it will raise the download and upload speeds of its ADSL broadband services for existing users this month, with the maximum downlink of its consumer packages rising from 4Mbps to 6Mbps. The telco is also currently running a half-price promotion for broadband subscriptions. The Romanian incumbent’s ADSL customer base reached 176,000 at the end of June, a net addition of 39,000 in three months, and up from around 50,000 a year earlier.

RomTelecom plans EUR200m investment (Romania)

RomTelecom says it will invest EUR200 million (USD271 million) to upgrade its network infrastructure to improve internet services. The firm has spent EUR1.5 billion over the last eight years improving its voice services, local newspaper Nine o’Clock reports. It claimed 3.4 million wireline customers at the end of 2006, down from just under four million a year earlier.

The main mobile operators on the market, enjoying a combined 95% market share, have appealed against the market regulator body ANRC’s decision of gradually cutting the interconnection fees by early 2009. The two warned that the investment plans will be renounced. In a similar move, the fix line operator Romtelecom (controlled by Greece’s OTE) skipped EUR 500mn investments following ANRC’s decision on the interconnection fees. Interconnection fees in Vodafone and Orange networks represent the fees paid to the two operators for calls made from other networks and are 8.1 eurocents per minute, as calculated in late 2003. The fee is to be reduced to 5.03 cents per minute by 2009. Local press quoted interconnection fees at 12.79 euro-cents on average in Europe and 19 eurocents in neighbouring Bulgaria.
