Orange UK has reportedly announced of upgrading its 3G network infrastructure across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North-East of England, which will allow for a more reliable combined voice and data services and a 99% call set-up success rate. Orange will also come up with a faster alternative of HSPDA which will enable support for mobile broadband, targeting a speed of 7.2Mbps. Its agenda also includes expanded coverage across UK, and adding of 450 new 2G and 3G sites over the next twelve months.

Telecom Italia to offer ADSL services in Sardinia

The Regional Authorities in Sardinia have signed a contract with Telecom Italia for the realisation of the Sics project, aimed at extending broadband services to remote and rural areas of the island. As a result of the deal, by June 2008, the inhabitants of more than 100 municipalities in Sardinia will be able to benefit from a broadband ADSL connection. The project is inspired by a similar project developed in Scotland in 2004.
Qtel arranges new credit facility

Telegeography writes….Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has taken out a USD2 billion revolving credit facility with a group of 18 international banks, The Peninsula reports. The telco will use the funds to support its international expansion plans, including the recently agreed acquisition of Wataniya Telecom. Barclays Bank was the facility agent, and initial mandated lead arrangers were Barclays, BNP Paribas, DBS Bank, Gulf International Bank and the Royal Bank of scotland.
