Sistema, the largest diversified consumer services corporation of Russia is planing to expand its mobile services to Bangladesh and China. Sistema, reportedly acquired licenses for mobile services in border areas of China and is in talks to acquire a local operator in Bangladesh. According to Interfax, Vladimir Evtushenkov, the main owner of Sistema, told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev about the plans.Sistema which holds majority of shares in Russian operators MTS, SkyLink and Comstar, has recently launched a mobile operator in India.
SkyLink expands EV-DO roaming (Russia)

The Russian CDMA-450 operator SkyLink has launched bi-lateral EV-DO data roaming between its network in Moscow and three of its regional operations. Roaming is now available over its networks in Novosibirsk, Ijevsk and Tver, bringing to 15 the total number of regions accessible by Moscow-based EV-DO users, CNews reports. Basic CDMA voice roaming services are available to SkyLink users across all 32 of its regional networks in Russia, plus three neighbouring countries. SkyLink, which claims around 440,000 CDMA-450 subscribers, has recently won GSM-900/1800 concessions which it intends to use to widen its service offering.

SkyLink wins GSM licences in Chechnya (Russia)

The Russian CDMA-450 mobile operator SkyLink has won another GSM-900 concession, this time in the republic of Chechnya. The operator, which recently won GSM spectrum in government spectrum auctions covering Siberia and the Far East, intends to overlay its existing CDMA-based networks with GSM infrastructure to widen its appeal. SkyLink’s Chechnyan division has also been awarded GSM-1800 frequencies, as has Svyazinvest subsidiary Nizhny Novgorod Sotovaya Svyaz (NSS), CNews reports. Chechnya is currently home to two GSM operators: MegaFon, which counts around 400,000 active subscribers in the republic, and Vimpelcom, which launched its first network there in September and is targeting 100,000 users within six months. The region has a population of approximately 1.2 million and with poor fixed network coverage cellular services are seen as a major growth area.

SkyLink to launch GSM next year (Russia)

Following its successful bid for GSM-1800 licences in four regions of Siberia, Russian CDMA-450 operator SkyLink has announced it intends to develop a CDMA/GSM multi-standard network, with the first GSM services to launch next year. Gul’nara Khasianova, SkyLink’s director general, told a conference that her company plans to implement CDMA/GSM services in ‘most’ of Russia’s regions by 2011, and will participate in further upcoming GSM spectrum auctions to further this goal. She added that SkyLink is initially eyeing three additional regions in which to obtain GSM concessions and construct networks, whilst utilising CDMA roaming to extend its national coverage further. Khasianova stated that GSM network construction in one region would require investment of around USD10 million, and predicted that project outlay would be recouped in five years. SkyLink, part of the Sistema group, already provides CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless services in the 450MHz frequency band.

The Russian CDMA-450 operator SkyLink has secured GSM-1800 spectrum in four regions in the Siberian Federal District, while Vimpelcom and Summa Telecom failed to pick up a single concession. The Russian government was auctioning 13 licences covering various parts of the Federal District; SkyLink won four 1800MHz licences, Sibirtelecom won two 1800MHz concessions and a combined 900/1800MHz permit and Vladivostok New Telephone won two licences. Other winners included Tele2 and Akos.

SkyLink rolls out EV-DO in Volgograd

Russian CDMA operator SkyLink has announced the deployment of an Alcatel-Lucent-supplied, 3G network based on CDMA2000 1?EV-DO technology that will support mobile high speed data services at speeds of up to 2.4Mbps in Volgograd. The new network will be operated by Volgograd Cellular Communications, a SkyLink subsidiary, which plans to offer voice and data services including mobile video, mobile office solutions and other value added services to local and roaming subscribers.

SkyLink to get investment boost

Telegeography writes…The Russian CDMA450 wireless operator Skylink is to get a RUB1.89 billion (USD71.3 million) injection of funds in 2007. The firm is set to issue 18.9 million shares worth RUB100 each, Prime Tass reports, and these will be offered to shareholders in proportion to their current holdings in the telco. SkyLink’s current shareholders include AFK Sistema and RTDC Holding. The firm has around 450,000 wireless subscribers on its CDMA450 networks nationwide.
