According to the latest figures, Nokia rules nearly 40% of the world’s mobile phone market. Report reveals that Nokia sold 12.4 million mobiles in the second quarter of 2008. It is beleived that Nokia has the best portfolio in the market to deal with the slowing economy. It is quite well known that western population is burdened with inflation, Nokia is offering mobile phones at a ultra low cost to developing countries which is attracting the buyers. A report forecasts that Nokia sales to increase in the second half of 2008 because of its touch-screen device that will now be more high mid-tier than high-tier. Samsung and LG have both increased their market share by two per cent but Motorola and Sony Ericsson have been less competitive. Motorola’s market share dropped by 4.5 per cent since last year while Sony Ericsson’s decreased by 1.4 per cent. Moreover Motorola lacks 3G and hot applications such as GPS and good-quality internet browsing. The company is refurbishing its strategy to increrase the sales may have to cut prices as it lacks good features.

Sony Ericsson has launched a new product in the content market, the PlayNow Arena website. The website features mobile content like music, games etc.
Initially, the website shows off with 1 million DRM-free tracks from the record labels such as Sony BMG, Warner Music and EMI.
The site will be expanding to other European countries by the end of this year and will be global site by the end of 2009, and will be selling an estimate of 5 million tracks.
According to Martin Blomkvist, Sony Ericsson’s head of content acquisition and management, that offering digital music minus the rights or copying restrictions and games will help the site to pull as many users as possible, which will inturn lead to a separate revenue stream, and will stimulate handset sales.
All tracks sold in Sweden will cost SEK 9.
Sony Ericsson W980 now on Pay-As-You-Go (UK)

Sony Ericsson’s new launch W980 walkman phone, a choice for music freaks, is now a part of the pay-as-you-go service.
W980 Walkman can now be purchased without any network credit, which was earlier released on O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone contract deals.
The Sony Ericsson lovers can now directly pay for the handset without signing up with lengthy and hefty contract deals.
Though pay as you call is more expensive than the contract deals but there is no control factor with the mobile operator, herein they can make calls only when they have credit and once the credit runs out there remains no possibility for heavy bills.

Sony Ericsson and T-Mobile USA join hands to launch and sell Sony Ericsson TM506 (USA)

Sony Ericsson has announced of expanding in it’s carrier channels in USA by adding T-Mobile USA. T-Mobile USA, will launch Sony Ericsson TM506, clamshell phone supporting T-Mobile’s 3G network, in early September.

AirMe available only on iPhone, plans to launch the application on Nokia & Sony Ericsson (India)

AIRME will be available on the Apple App Store for new iPhone users proclaimed AirMe. “AirMe is a free, easy-to-use downloaded application that allows iPhone users to take photos and have them instantly tagged and sent to the user’s Flickr or Facebook accounts,” company said. All photos are auto-tagged with location, time, weather and any user customised information, it said. Presently, AirMe is being used in 56 countries around the world.
AirMe application when downloaded from the Apple App Store, users can simply launches AirMe and takes the picture. Users could tag their photos and with the GPS enabled iphone. They user also had the option of automatically tagging their pictures with their location, weather condition and temperature, it said. Apoorva Ruparel, a founder member and VP Strategy and Marketing at AirMe, said AirMe is about sharing the moment, in the moment. Currently, AirMe is accessible on the iPhone and has plans to instigate the application on the Nokia and Sony Ericsson platforms in the near future, with other phone platforms to follow as well.
ZTE targets to be the world’s top five mobile phone vendors within the next 3 years (China)

ZTE, China’s largest handset manufacturer aiming to become one of the world’s top five mobile phone vendors within the next three years. According to a local media report, the company, currently ranked sixth in global market-share, aims to increase annual shipments from 50 million units to 100 million units in 2010. Latest updates reveals that ZTE is aiming to increase the proportion of revenue contributed by its handset division. ZTE dominated the mobile basestation market in Q2 this year, winning 31% of all contracts worldwide, a reserch report discloses. Securing the number five handset spot would see ZTE overtake current fifth-placed player Sony Ericsson, which has 8.2% of the market, report reveals. Nokia dominates with 40.9% market share in Q2 and Samsung begs second position with 15.3%.
China’s mobile phones expected to hit 605 million in 2008 (China)

CCID Consulting, China, released data on the production volumes of mobile phones in China and that it is expected to hit 605 million mobile phone in 2008.
Of these 605 million mobile phones roughly 66% or 400 million handsets will be exported to overseas markets leaving the remaining 205 million mobile phones for domestic use.
H1′08 manufacturers in China produced 279 million mobile phones while the world’s top five manufacturers, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG accounted for 65% of the total production, which is a drop from the 70 to 80% that was recorded over the previous two years.
Sales of mobile handsets in China hit 96.4 million during H1′08 which is a 17.5% rise.
Apple leads the Q2 growth rate but stands second to BlackBerry for H1 market share (USA)

The US smartphone market has seen a strong double - digit growth in Q2′08. Apple leaded the league, with the growth rate of 125.6%. RIM BlackBerry came second with 92.1% yearly growth and Sony Ericsson followed in the third place.
Motorola lagged behind in the fast growing US smartphone business and was the only vendor posting double-digit drops for both sequential and annual growth in Q2.
But still RIM BlackBerry dominates the US market with a market share of 46% in H1 whereas Apple has only 15%. However, with iPhone’s continued strong success, it is likely that Apple will soon challenge the Blackberry.
O2 introduces Opera Mini in Germany (Germany)

O2 brings mobile internet in Germany in the form of Opera Mini browser on its Internet-to-Go handsets.
Internet-to-Go will be available on several handsers with pre-installed and over-the-air version of the browser. The service fives customers the full Internet experience from the phone, allowing access to news, weather, e-commerce, and social networking.
