The German mobile telecom sector is valued at $6.44Bn in Q3′08, a rise of 2% since Q2′08 but a fall of 1.8% since Q3′07. The revenue rise since Q2′08 is driven by seasonal effects, while the year-on-year fall was due to cuts in mobile termination rates and roaming fees. Vodafone and T-Mobile, the two leading incumbents grabbed 70% of the total revenue market even after strong efforts by E-plus and O2. E-Plus is the German operator to show a positive result in y-o-y market share, majorly in prepaid segment. The company’s market share advanced 1.2% to 15.3% of revenues in the Q3′08.Comparing the figures of Q3′07, Vodafone’s market share dipped by 0.7% to 35.2%, while T-Mobile fell by 0.2% to 35.3%. O2 slid to fourth place, with its market share down by 0.1% to 14.3%.
The German mobile subscriber base rose by 2.6 million subscribers to a total of 106 million subscribers at Q3′08 end. Market penetration jumped to 129.0% at September-end, from 113.4% the year before. T-Mobile and Vodafone ruled the market with 36.6% and 34.1% of the market respectively. Together, they lost 1.1% of the market to other operators, with E-Plus at no.3 with a market share of 16.1% and O2 at 13.2%.

Russia’s second largest mobile operator Vimpelcom psts its Q3′08 revenues of $2.84 billion, up 45.3% since last year, driven by a strong subscriber base. OIBDA grew by 36.7% to $1.38 billion, giving a margin of 48.8%. Net income rose by 41.3% to $269 million. Capex doubled since 2007 to $692.9 million from $339 million. Vimpelcom’s Russian operation’s revenues rose by 46.8% in Q3′08 since last year to $2.4 billion. Revenues from the Beeline mobile operation rose 23.2% to $2.03 billion. OIBDA in the Russian mobile segment reached $1.2billion, a rise of 39.3% from 871 million in Q3′07. Vimpelcom, at the end of Q3′08 had a subscriber base of 45.09 million in Russia, generating ARPU of $15.2, up 19.5% from 2007.

Taiwan based 3G operator Vibo Telecom anticipates a subscriber base of one million 3.5G users by 2009-end. According to Vibo’s president Feng-hsiung Chang the telco will have a subscriber base of 300,000 3.5G users by 2008-end, moving onto somewhere between 600,000 and one million by end-2009.

The Bolivian incumbent Entel reaches a mark of 2 million mobile subscribers in the country. The company’s mobile unit Entel Movil has been working on an agressive investment plan since May’08, after the government took over the operator.
According to Sittel, the Bolivian regulator, the country’s mobile telephony segment reached 4.4mn subscribers at the end of Q2′08.

Digitel, the Venenzuelan mobile operator deploys 18 base stations in the month of October for its GSM expansion worldwide. Digitel deployed the infrastructure in six regions of the country where the company had operations: greater Caracas, Centro, Centro Llanos, Centro Occidente, Oriente and Guayana. Digitel which currently has a subscriber base of 5.5Mn, expects to grow the base to 6Mn by 2008-end.

PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk, Indonesia’s third largest operator, say that it may miss its subscriber target for the year 2008, which stood at 25.1 million by September end driven by financial crunches.The operator further confirmed to sell its telecom towers for up to $900 million by the end of 2008 and to announce the winning bidder for its towers later this year and close the deal by early 2009.
“Challenges entering the fourth quarter are bigger due to heated competition and a less conducive economy,” Hasnul Suhaimi said. “We were targetting about 27-28 million subscribers by 2008 end, but looking at current conditions, it may slow to a range of 25-27 million.”

Ethiopia Telecommunications Corp (ETC) intends to increase its mobile subscriber base to 15 million from its present 2.2 million within the next two years. The targets are to be met by using a loan of $1.5Bn for network expansion. The state-owned telco also confirms the plans to roll out the CDMA network capacity for 2.4 million subscribers.

Megafon continues to grow in the Russian mobile market in the month of October by adding 960,894 new subscribers. Megafon, country’s third largest operator, is competing closely with Vimpelcom, which stood at 45.88 million, 31.7% of total net addition. Megafon’s net additions counts to 38.7% share of Russia’s total net additions and totalled its subscriber base to 42.32 million. MTS lagged behind its rivals in terms of new additions, claiming just 19.4% with a subscriber base of 62.36 million in October, causing a threat to its number one position. Russia ended October with just over 182 million mobile subscribers, up from 179.54 million at the end of September.

Starcomms, Nigeria, posts consolidated revenue of $234.1 million for the period of January- September’08, seeing a rise of 84% since last year, driven by 142% growth in the company’s active subscriber base, which reached 1.55 million at the end of September 2008.
The operator has so far doubled its network expansion to 19 cities which will reach 31 cities, 20 states and 140 towns by the end of 2008.
EBITDA and net income both came in below expectations to $19.55 million and $17.85 million respectively, caused due to increases in handset subsidy costs and dealer commissions.

Orascom Telecom, the Egyptian mobile operator, posts a net profit of $90.5 million for Q3′08, experiencing a fall of 28% since 2007, driven by a fall in revenues in its Pakistani operations.
“Most of our businesses, with the exception of Pakistan, continue to perform on target in terms of growth and profitability,” chairman Naguib Sawiris said in a statement. “In Pakistan the political, security, financial and economic conditions have been very difficult.”
ARPU for Mobilink Pakistan declined by 26% due to the depriciation in Pakistan Rupee against US Dollar.
The company posted $1.37 billion of revenues for Q3. The Egyptian operator ended the quarter with a subscriber base of 79 million, experiencing a rise of 22% since last year.
