Virgin Mobile launches 30p/day internet access tariff (UK)

  • December 1st, 2008
  • 12:58 pm

Virgin Mobile UK launches an all-you-can-eat internet access tariff at 30p per day, which is claimed to be a tariff three times cheaper in comparison to other offers by rival networks. The new rates will be levied from December 8 applying to both contract and pre-pay subscribers, Virgin reveals.
“By providing unlimited access at a highly competitive rate, we are giving all our customers the opportunity to use the internet on their phone without having to worry about racking up huge bills or working out complicated price structures,” said Virgin Mobile MD Graeme Oxby. However, the twist in the story lies that the 30p/day rate is counted as offering unlimited access, to which a daily fair use policy of 25MB applies. The subscribers exceeding this limit will have to pay £2 for each extra MB.

  • November 27th, 2008
  • 8:14 am

Start-up mobile communications provider, Econet Wireless Kenya is set to go live with the Interconnect Manager solution from convergent billing and interconnect specialist, Cerillion Technologies.

Econet is part of Econet Wireless International, a well-established diversified telecommunications group, with operations in more than nine countries in Africa, Europe and the East Asia Pacific Rim. The expansion into Kenya has been made possible due to substantial investment by Indian telecoms company, Essar Communications Holdings.

Under the agreement, Cerillion Interconnect Manager will support Econet in achieving its revenue assurance goals by enabling it to bill interconnect partners accurately and to efficiently reconcile invoices received. “Cerillion stood out as providing the ideal interconnect solution for our demanding requirements,” confirms Michael Foley, CEO, Econet Wireless Kenya. “As a start-up operation, it is essential that we generate interconnect revenues and effectively manage our national and international interconnect costs from day one” he added.

With an existing customer base in West Africa, the agreement with Econet provides the opportunity for Cerillion to expand its footprint into East Africa for the first time. “The fast-growing African telecoms market offers many exciting opportunities,” says Louis Hall, Cerillion’s chief executive. “The need for efficient interconnect management is becoming an increasingly urgent issue for operators requiring revenue assurance and efficient settlement.” Hall believes that this marks the first step in what he hopes will be an expanding and mutually beneficial relationship: “The agreement is based on a group licensing model, which will enable Econet Wireless to roll out similar schemes into other African countries in the future,” he confirms.

MTN Uganda selects AIRCOM to deliver network optimisation tools

  • November 19th, 2008
  • 6:17 am

AIRCOM International, the leading independent network planning and optimisation consultancy, today announced that it has signed a deal to deliver network optimisation tools to MTN Uganda. MTN continues to deploy GSM network infrastructure across Uganda and now provides mobile coverage to over 150 cities, towns and villages across the country. MTN chose AIRCOM to ensure its customers enjoy an optimum quality of mobile service, as infrastructure continues to expand across the country.
MTN selected AIRCOM following a detailed evaluation of available network solutions. The African operator selected AIRCOM’s DATASAFE tool as the best means to manage the ongoing re-configuring and updating of radio nodes within the network to maintain the best possible network service. AIRCOM’s flexible approach to pricing was another telling factor, particularly in view of the current global financial down turn.
“As Uganda’s leading service provider, we have established unprecedented consumer popularity and brand recognition,” said Francis Kazinduki, CTO, MTN Uganda. “It is therefore critical that we make a clear commitment to our customers and deliver the strongest possible network quality of service. Our work with AIRCOM is evidence of our determination to continue providing market leading communications services to our subscribers.”
“Effective configuration management is a critical factor in the process of building and maintaining quality networks,” said Graham Kemp, Managing Director, Africa, AIRCOM International. “By deploying DATASAFE, MTN Uganda will join other subsidiaries of the MTN Group in benefiting from the seamless, automated network reconfiguration techniques which maximize network quality.”
Configuration management has always been the subject of performance manager’s headaches, due to erroneous data transcript and configuration files, which have the potential to cause outages and poor levels of service. DATASAFE meets this challenge by offering a central repository and a multi-vendor, multi-technology tool that enables operators to work within a single configuration management environment, dramatically reducing operational overheads.
About AIRCOM International
AIRCOM is an independent provider of network and data management tools and services. The company specialises in end-to-end network planning, sharing, outsourcing and OSS optimisation for IP and cellular networks.
Headquartered in the UK with offices in 18 countries, AIRCOM has more than 10 years’ experience across 131 countries for over half the world’s mobile operators, including more than 3.5 million man hours working on 3G networks alone. Every day 19 out of the 20 top global operators depend upon AIRCOM’s tools and consultants to improve the coverage and customer experience for more than 1.1 billion subscribers.
AIRCOM continues to grow its customer base each year, offering advice, training and support services, backed by high performance tools designed to deliver real benefits for both subscribers and operators.
